At the start of every semester, students have the opportunity to sign-up for eight-week courses in areas such as aerobics, circuit training, kickboxing and yoga. If pool is your game, pool competitions with great prizes are run in each semester.
GMIT places great emphasis on the development of inter-college competition in sport. In order to maintain the busy schedule of these teams, development officers are put in place to deal with the administration and organisation on behalf of the clubs. Currently we have a GAA Development Officer and a Rugby Development Officer.
Rugby Development Officer
GMIT RFC currently puts forward two teams in the Irish Colleges Rugby Union (ICRU) competition, a senior team and fresher’s team and also an U-20’s team in the Connacht League. The rugby club also competes in the annual Student Sevens competition. Tag Rugby and women’s rugby are also offered. A Youth Development Officer (YDO), part-funded by the IRFU, assists in the administration and organisation of the Rugby Club.
GAA Development Officer
GMIT has a full-time GAA Development Officer who deals with the administration and development of gaelic games at GMIT. Gaelic Games as a whole have the largest club membership within the Institute. The men’s senior football team competes in the Sigerson Cup and the hurling team competes in the Fitzgibbon Cup. Camogie, ladies’ football and handball are also catered for.

Societies
GMIT has over twenty societies offering a range of opportunities for social interaction and personal development. You can join groups such as the DJ society, Theatre group, participate in Gaisce - The Presidents Award, join the digital photography society or take in the beautiful scenery of Ireland with the Weekenders Society.
If music is your passion, GMIT SU, in conjunction with the Chaplain, runs an annual song contest for solo artists and bands with categories of covers and originals. Heats are held throughout the year and the winners in each category go through to represent the Institute in the National IT Factor Contest where they will compete with artists from other Institutes around the country.
For the budding poet, journalist, photographer or film critic the SU produces a bi-weekly newsletter called ‘waSUp’ where contributions from students are encouraged.

GMIT is affiliated with the Board of Irish College Societies (BICS), which provides access to a wealth of information on societies and advice on best practice. There are National Awards towards the end of each academic year to reward the huge effort made by affiliated colleges and to celebrate the vital importance and value that societies and their activities bring to member colleges.
Student Activities Office
The Student Activities Office is a branch of the Students’ Union that provides services, support, and opportunities for students to engage in extra-curricular activities. The Student Activities Officer’s function is to assist in establishing new activities while providing assistance and advice to existing groups. For further information about extra-curricular activities in GMIT please contact the Student Activities Officer on 091-742008 or e-mail

Annual Student Achievement Awards
Towards the end of each academic year the Students Union hosts a formal awards ceremony to acknowledge the successes of outstanding students over the academic year. The successes may be in the form of individuals or teams who make an outstanding contribution in any of the following areas: achievement in competition, organisation/administration of a club of society or any other activity of merit that a student might have participated in.
The Achievement Awards are, for students involved in extra- curricular activities, the highlight of the academic year and a great event is always assured. Over the years many special guests have been in attendance to speak with the students.
The Sports Hall and Fitness Centre
The sports hall is located on the main campus. It provides facilities for numerous groups, clubs and classes to participate in indoor activities such as indoor soccer, basketball, volleyball and badminton. Students can book the sports hall by contacting the Sports Officer whose office is located within the sports centre. The facility is free of charge to students, but advance booking is essential due to demand.
The Fitness Centre (gym) is located upstairs in the sports hall. This modern facility is equipped with the finest treadmills, resistance equipment, cardiovascular machines and free weights available. The Fitness Centre is professionally staffed at all times and offers fitness assessments and personal training programmes free of charge. The current opening hours are Monday - Thursday from 8.30am to 9.30pm and Fridays from 8.30am to 3pm.
Sporting Scholarships
GMIT supports the development of talented athletes and recognises their increasing need to successfully balance both academic and sporting commitments. GMIT facilitates this vision through the Sports Scholarship Programme.
