Why study Hotel Management? This award will prepare graduates for employment in Ireland and indeed all over the world. The opportunity to travel and work in this dynamic and exciting sector is always worthy of consideration. This honours degree was the first Hotel Management degree in Ireland and many graduates now work in senior roles worldwide.


Programme Modules


A number of modules are covered on this programme including Food Studies, Hospitality Operations, Financial Accountancy, Marketing Principles, Tourism or one international language from French, German or Spanish, Information Technology, Legal Studies, Market Research and Strategic Management.


Career Opportunities


Graduates will have excellent employment opportunities, at various levels of employment, in all aspects of the hospitality and tourism industry at home and abroad. Alternatively, graduates may specialise in specific areas such as marketing, finance, human resources, operations management to name but some within the service industries.


Other Essential Information Work Placements • At the end of year one, there is a twelve week work placement in an Irish hotel or other approved property, organised by the LINKS office in conjunction with the student.


• After the second year examinations, students undertake a thirty week industrial placement, organised by the LINKS office in conjunction with the student. Irish and European students must complete their placement outside of Ireland and non-EU students will complete their placement in Ireland. An industrial project must be completed in respect of this placement.


• If students are considering an international career, the School would encourage students to study an international language during their four years of study and to complete their international placement in a location that supports the development of the language. Students are supported and monitored during their placement.


• Formal relationships exist with EU and American universities and these provide for exciting opportunities to study and work abroad during the second placement.


International Links The School has extensive international links with hotels, tourism organisations and educational organisations. In addition, the school is an active member of various hotel school associations

including the Association of European Hotel & Tourism schools (AEHT) and the Council for Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education (CHRIE).


Recognition by Professional Bodies


Graduates are admitted as full members of the Irish Hospitality Institute and receive full exemption from the examination requirements of the Hotel, Catering and Institutional Management Association (UK), being admitted to the grade of Licentiate member. Progression to full membership is possible on completion of a specified period working in the industry. Significant exemptions are also available to graduates who wish to pursue membership of the Institute of Chartered Management Accountants (CIMA).


Second Level Teaching This programme is recognised by the Teaching Council for progression to the Post Graduate Diploma in Education, on completion of which, graduates are qualified to teach Business and Accountancy to Leaving Certificate level in second level schools.


Follow-on Studies


GMIT honours (level 8) qualifications are recognised worldwide for post-graduate entry.

Joe Quinn, BA Hotel & Catering Management


After graduating from GMIT, Joe Quinn worked in Switzerland and the UK, and is the current Chief Operations Officer for the Jurys Inn Hotel Group. Jurys Inn Hotel Group operates 30 city centre hotels in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Prague. Prior to Jurys, he worked for IHG in Geneva, Ramada Hotels in Reading and Hilton on Edgeware Road (formerly Metropole Hotel) in London.
