Why study Outdoor Education and Leisure? This programme combines skills training in adventure sports with an understanding of the developmental and educational role of outdoor education. In addition to gaining a range of National Governing Body awards in adventure sports such as rock climbing, surfing, hill walking and kayaking, students will examine group development, communications and teaching. One day a week is spent on adventure sports’ practicals in venues including Achill, Connemara and numerous surf beaches in Mayo. There are also weekend practical courses which provide opportunities for specialisation in adventure sports.
Programme Modules These to focus on four main strands: • Adventure Sports and Work Experience • The Irish Landscape, Environment and Ecology, • Psychology and Teaching/Facilitation skills • Health and Fitness, First Aid and Water Safety
In addition, the students may choose electives from the following areas: • Social Geography and Rural Development • Business Management and Marketing • Languages • Social Care
Career Opportunities
Graduates find employment in the following areas: • As instructors and managers in adventure and outdoor education centres.
• As development officers and managers in educational, youth and community organizations
• Adventure tourism operators. • Environmental education providers.
Other Essential Information • Students will be assessed on their swimming competency. Those who cannot swim 50 metres will be required to take swimming classes to achieve this standard before they will be allowed to participate in activities such as surfing, kayaking, and sailing.
• Students are expected to purchase some personal equipment for the outdoor activities. Technical equipment is provided on a deposit basis.
• Students are required to attain National/Governing Body Instructional Awards in at least two adventure sports
