Mature Applicants
Offers for the quota of places will be made by CAO in early July. Further offers may be made later subject to the availability of places.
Defer Policy (CAO Applicants)
An applicant who receives an offer of a place may seek deferral to the next academic year. Candidates may defer for any reason other than to attend another full-time third level programme of study or to repeat the Leaving Certificate.
Defer Procedure
1. Do NOT accept the offer in the manner shown on the CAO offer notice
2. Write to or email the Admissions Officer, Office of Academic Affairs, Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology, Dublin Road, Galway (
academic.affairs@
gmit.ie) outlining your reason(s) for the defer request. Give your name as it appears on your CAO application, your CAO application number and course code of the offer you wish to defer. Mark “DEFERRED ENTRY” clearly on the envelope or in the subject line of your email.
3. The letter or email should arrive in the Admissions Office, GMIT at least two days before the reply date shown on the offer notice.
4. In order to take up the deferred place, the applicant must re- apply to CAO by 1 February of the succeeding year, placing the deferred programme as the first and only preference on the application form.
4. The student must make the application in writing to the Admissions Officer. In the case of a health and safety issue, a written notice from the Programme Chair and Head of School must support the application.
5. The student/applicant will not be allowed to attend classes in the new programme before approval is granted.
6. The Admissions Committee and Registrar must approve the transfer in advance of attendance on the new programme.
7. With the exception of nursing degrees, any transfer would result in the creation of an additional place on the desired programme.
8. The CAO will be informed of any such transfer. Interrupted Studies - re-admission
Year one students (having accepted a place through CAO) who interrupt their studies through the year are re-admitted directly by the Institute.
GMIT Internal Transfer Policy (Students admitted through the CAO)
1. Special consideration will be given to transfer requests based on health and safety, disability grounds or other extenuating circumstance.
2. The tranferee must have a minimum of the cut-off points for the new programme.
3. The transfer must be recommended by the Admissions Committee and approved by the Registrar.
