Why Study Civil Engineering?


Civil engineering technicians help civil engineers plan and oversee the construction of roads, buildings, bridges, dams, wastewater treatment systems, and other structures. As a civil engineering technician, you will have a creative, diverse and challenging career and will be typically part of a team providing technical support to civil engineers on projects. The programme also provides a good basis for future study in civil engineering.


Programme Modules This higher certificate course aims to develop your technical and practical knowledge of the core modules applicable to civil engineering. Group and individual projects play a large part in coursework and are designed to reflect ‘real life’ projects in the industry. The course covers a range of modules including Structural Design, Land Surveying, Construction Technology, CAD and Communication Skills.


Career Opportunities


Civil Engineering technicians are employed, both in Ireland and abroad by contractors, subcontractors, consultants, state and semi- state bodies, local authorities and suppliers of civil engineering products and equipment. You can expect to work in a technical capacity as a surveyor, draughtsperson, project supervisor or laboratory technician involved in testing materials and supporting companies in the civil/construction industry.

As a graduate of the Higher Certificate in Civil Engineering, you are eligible to apply to Engineers Ireland to use the registered professional title of Engineering Technician.


Follow-on Studies


Graduates can proceed to year 3 of the Level 7 Bachelor of Engineering (Ordinary) Degree in Civil Engineering at GMIT.

Why Study Civil Engineering? Have you ever wondered how clean water gets to the tap, how 15-storey buildings and 3 km long suspension bridges stay standing, what caused the Tower of Pisa to lean? If you like variety, civil engineering offers a huge range of different types of projects on which you could be employed: roads, bridges, pipelines, buildings, sewage treatment plants, dams, jetties, etc. If you like the idea of having a variety of duties on a day-to-day basis: supervising tradesmen on site, attending meetings with architects, quantity surveyors and building managers, surveying a field to assess its suitability as a building site, using computer software to carry out engineering calculations and produce drawings, etc. a career in civil engineering offers all this and more.


Programme Modules The Civil Engineering programme in GMIT, designed by Chartered Civil Engineers, is divided between lectures and practical work and the application of civil engineering software. Group and individual projects play a large part in coursework and are designed to reflect ‘real life’ projects in the industry. The course covers a range of modules including Structural Design, Land Surveying, Hydraulics, Soil Mechanics, Construction Technology, Management Practices & Procedures and Communication Skills.


Career Opportunities


Graduates will have the ability to take responsibility at a higher technician/middle management level with engineering projects either in a design office or on a construction site. The most common areas of employment are with civil engineering consultancies and local authorities where most of the work is office-based but with opportunities to spend time on site as well, and with civil and building contractors, where most of the work is site-based.


Other Essential Information Recognition by Professional Bodies The programme has been accredited by Engineers Ireland to enable graduates to apply for associate member grade and gain the title of 'Associate Engineer'.


Work Placement


Students will carry out a 6-week industrial placement in the third year. Follow-on Studies


Graduates can proceed to a Level 8 Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) Degree in Civil Engineering at GMIT.
