TOTAL LICENSING AUSTRALIA
FRED GAFFNEY’S NATURAL LIFE
In an exclusive interview with Total Licensing Australia, Fred Gaffney, widely
known as the father of Australian licensing, told us about his activities in the
marketplace and how he is rebuilding a business following the collapse of
Gaffney International eighteen months ago.
With the backing of Mike Wrublewski, the former owner of the Sydney
Kings basketball team and Australian member of Sydney’s 2000 Olympic bid
committee, Fred is now working as a consultant under the banner name
Natural Life.
Outlining his activities, Fred said, “Obviously, it’s been a tough year or so. But
I do feel I can build up my activities now. I’m not setting myself up as a licens-
ing agent. There are plenty of those in the marketplace doing a good job. I
am using my experience in the business to help companies grow their retail and distribution.
Sanity is one of Fred’s first clients. The company is one of Australia’s largest entertainment retailers with over 200
outlets specialising in the sale of movies, music, merchandise and games. The Sanity concept grew out of a perceived
market demand for a new type of music store combining the ‘street wear’ fashions. Operating since 1992, this concept
has seen strong growth over the last decade.
A further client is DealsDirect.com.au, Australia’s leading online discount department store. The site carries over 5000
products in twenty-eight categories including toys, electronics and homewares.
The third major client that Fred is helping is the Create Group. The company is a leader in marketing promotions
and manufacturers over a billion products each year. They work with blue-chip cients including McDonalds, Kellogg’s,
Nestlé, M&M Mars and Disney.
When talking about his new business, Fred has lost none of his legendary enthusiasm, despite the fact that Australia is
beginning to suffer the consequences of the global economic downturn.
“America caught the flu and we caught a cold from them”, he explained. “Yes there are problems with the economy
but generally Australia is reasonably steady”.
Gaffney is looking to build up his consultancy over the coming year. “I really do think that the opportunity is out there
and there’s certainly a need for our kind of help and expertise. Over the last eighteen months, I’ve had the opportunity
to stand back and rethink my activities and I’m convinced we can provide a valuable service to all types of companies
looking to grow their retail and distribution businesses”.
