CHA NUMBERS HOLD UP, DESPITE RECESSION
Despite a recession and gloomy economic outlook, the Craft & Hobby Association were pleased with the overall attend-
ance at the 2009 CHA Winter Convention Trade Show. Held in January, the 68th Annual CHA Winter Show attracted over
11,937 qualified attendees to the largest exhibition of its kind in the world.
This year CHA welcomed 5,207 buyers from more than 60 different countries representing a decrease of 9.5% from
2008. Business networkers include attendees that, while not buying or exhibit-
ing, contribute to the business done at the show. There were 1,504 business net-
workers in attendance, which included designers, non-exhibiting manufacturers,
manufacturer’s representatives, teachers, publishers, service providers as well as
160 members of the press. This figure was only down slightly, at 1.5% from the
2008 Show.
The 2009 CHA Winter Show attendance figures attribute a 20% decrease in
exhibitor personnel/booth staff to recessionary cutbacks that limited the total
number of people exhibitors brought to the show. While final figures represent
a 13% overall decline in attendance, when factoring out exhibiting/booth staff at-
tendance, the buyer and business networker attendance only declined by about
7.8% from 2008, a very respectable performance in light of the current economic
climate.
“We were rather tentative approaching the Winter CHA Show, but we were
ecstatic to find this was our best CHA show to date,” explained Jeff Cohen of
Petaloo International. “The buyer quality was excellent both internationally and
domestically. We were able to discuss new product lines and marketing opportunities at length with new and current
customers. We look forward to another great Show this summer in Orlando.”
“It is gratifying to know that so many companies were conducting record setting business deals on the Show floor. It
underscores the urgent value of participating in tradeshows during a recession,” explained Steve Berger, Chief Executive
Officer, CHA. “We are confident that our 2009 CHA Summer Show will also be successful as we have already sold 50%
of the show floor space at our brand-new venue in Orlando.”
