Buyer optimism for increased business travel


AIRPLUS HAS RELEASED the findings of its 13th annual Interna- tional Travel Management Study (ITMS), which shows travel managers worldwide are expecting an increase in business travel this year. Globally, 35 per cent of managers expect to oversee more business trips in 2018, but those in emerging economies are more optimistic – in India, 70 per cent of managers see an increase, followed by 55 per cent in Brazil and 54 per cent in China. Perhaps as a result of uncertain


political and economic times, travel managers in the US and UK are changing their tune; the number of respondents expecting growth in business travel has decreased dramatically from previous surveys (25 per cent compared to 50 per cent in 2017), while the proportion that foresee a decline in travel has more than doubled (12 per cent versus 5 per cent in 2017). The survey also included business


travellers, who revealed they are increasingly turning to hotel review websites when planning a work trip (93 per cent). Business travellers are also coming


round to the idea of virtual payments, with 46 per cent of virtual credit card users so persuaded by the benefits of such payments after their first use that they used them regularly. Airplus analysed data from more than 3,000 travel managers and travellers in 24 countries to compile the ITMS, which can be downloaded at airplus.com, the Airplus website.


RAILWAYS GWR user accounts breached


GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY has decided to reset the log-in details for more than one million customer accounts after it discovered that hackers had gained access to a percentage of them. According to a BBC report, GWR said only around 1,000 customer

accounts were accessed, and no bank information had been exposed as it was protected by encryption. A GWR spokesman told the BBC that it had identified “unauthorised attempts to access a small number of GWR.com accounts”. He added that the hacking activity was quickly


spotted and shut down, but some of the attempts successfully gained access to the accounts.


The firm made the decision to reset the passwords of more than a million accounts, sending an automated message prompting users to enter a new password.

AUSTRIAN AIRLINES APPOINTS NEW CEO


LUFTHANSA GROUP HAS NAMED Dr Alexis von Hoensbroech as the new chief executive officer of Austrian Airlines, effective 1 August. Currently Von Hoensbroech is chief commercial officer of Lufthansa Cargo. He will replace Kay Kratky who is stepping down in July after three years in the post. Von Hoensbroech joined Lufthansa Group in 2005 and has worked his


way through the ranks, having worked closely with Kratky in previous roles. He holds a doctorate in astrophysics. The group says the appointment still needs approval from the supervisory board of Austrian Airlines. Dorothea von Boxberg, currently head of global sales management at Lufthansa Cargo, will succeed von Hoensbroech as chief commercial officer, subject to board approval.
