EDITOR’S LETTER MATTHEW PARSONS You’re welcome

listening to different takes on the challenges this dynamic industry faces, and appreciating your frank and honest viewpoints. But as our new columnist Doug Lansky argues on p145, the art of the welcome is under threat, in particular at airports. Hotels grasp the concept of welcoming a lot more, but our analysis on p38 reveals how even the role of concierge is morphing into something else as new technologies emerge and robots jostle for front-of-house roles.

I’M JOINING BBT as corporates are at another crossroads, too, with the much dreaded/hotly anticipated (delete as appropriate) arrival of GDPR. We won’t feel its impact until after 25 May, but from what we’re hearing we must brace ourselves. By now your organisation will be prepared, but if you feel like screaming you’ll relate to our feature on p76. There are other regulations in the pipeline, too, and Ian Skuse rightly points out TMCs and corporates must “tread carefully to ensure they do not inadvertently break the rules” (p149). My arrival coincides with the proposed merger of two titans – Amex GBT and HRG. In our annual Leading 50 TMCs round-up (pp87-126), you’ll find them comfortably residing in second and third places respectively. How the leaderboard will shape up this time next year may be very different. Mergers of this scale tend to send shockwaves through an industry, and we’ll follow developments closely.

AS EVER, OPEN DEBATE REMAINS KEY, and there’ll be no shortage of that at our next BBT Forum, held in association with ACTE, on 16 May (find out more and register at bbtforum.com). “Complete the current, embrace the future” is the theme and we’ve an impressive line-up of speakers. More importantly, there’s a warm welcome guaranteed.
