Improving hair thickening with amaranth peptides

Healthy, thick hair with beautiful movement and shine is the goal of consumers of all ages. One of the biggest concerns of consumers, regardless of age, is hair thinning. This is mainly characterised by a decrease in hair diameter. Hair thinning and a decrease in hair diameter have negative consequences for a proper manageability and a healthy appearance of hair.1,2,3 NaturePep® Amaranth (INCI: Amaranthus

average molecular weight peptide fractions to penetrate hair fibre and deliver multifunctional hair benefits. Amaranth’s unique peptide composition
(rich in phenylalanine and histidine amino acids) with a low average molecular weight (<500 Da) penetrates the hair cuticle via diffusion and binds to the internal structure of the hair via hydrogen bonding to help reinforce its structural integrity and tensile strength, which leads to an increase in hair diameter. Our study results are in line with previously reported findings, which demonstrate that hair diameter increase provides increase in hair thickness and body.5
Hair diameter A proof of principle study was developed to evaluate the ability of Amaranth peptide technology to increase hair diameter on individual fibres and to increase hair thickening. Amaranth peptide technology was used at 1% solution and compared with a water solution as a control. Water is known to cause hair swelling and can increase hair diameter.5,6 In this study, we used bleached Caucasian
hair swatches. Hair diameter measurements were performed with a Leica DM 2700 microscope coupled with LasX V3.04 software. Hair swatches were soaked in treatment solutions for 15 minutes at 40°C and allowed to air-dry for 24 hours. This procedure was repeated for three applications, then swatches were coloured with Rhodamine B dye, and prepared for microscopic evaluations. Hair fibres were mounted on slides and

CONTROL ABSTRACT
It is well reported that hair ageing and repeated external insults, such as chemical damage or mechanical abrasion, cause significant decrease in hair fibre diameter which leads to thin, fragile, lifeless looking hair. NaturePep® Amaranth, part of TRI-K Industries’ natural peptide technology platform, is specifically designed to address thin, fragile hair and increase hair diameter and thickness. measurements. Microscopic analysis was used to determine the initial diameter of the fibre and after three applications with tested materials. Measurements were conducted on 30 hair fibres (three measurements for each fiber) consistently on the middle portion of the fibre. As Figure 1 shows, after three applications
of Amaranth peptides, hair diameter increased significantly by 13.8% compared to initial (p<0.0001) and by 11.5% compared to water solution (p<0.0001). Water solution did not induce a statistically significant increase in the hair fibre diameter compared to the initial diameter. Microscopic images of the hair fibre treated
