HYGIENE Raw materials that foam tend to have a

high pH. Whilst some dermatologists suggest avoiding products with a pH of more than 7, this might not be possible for those seeking optimal cleansing. Suggestions for products to display a pH on their label have been voiced by a number of dermatologists as this would aid consumers in making an informed choice.

Maskne & microbiota In addition to the cleanliness of hands, mask-wearing has been an additional hygiene measure that has been mandatory for extended periods of time since the outbreak of the pandemic. This precaution has caused many to suffer from skin complaints including the infamous ‘maskne’. Wearing a mask increases heat and humidity to

that area of the face, while the fabric of the mask may cause mechanical irritation. “The constant rubbing of the masks against our skin causes micro-tears, allowing easier entry for bacteria and dirt to clog up our pores,” explains Singapore- based dermatologist Angeline Yong. In order to best combat the effects, she advises clients to opt for lightweight moisturisers under masks.7 Maskne has resulted in increased interest in acne solutions and also detoxifying products. Beauty giant L’Oréal says it has seen a strong rise in deep-cleansing products. Many groups of consumers have expressed interest in purifying and rebalancing, most commonly those aged 40-50 and particularly men. The boom in online shopping has encouraged this customer base to explore these beauty products when they might have been reluctant to do so in a traditional shop.8 As both established and indie brands

continue to launch purifying and therapeutic skincare, it is clear this trend is here to stay for some time to come. Therapeutic skincare brands, those who produce products with skin health benefits, grew by over 12% in 2020 according to research by Cosmetics & Toiletries USA. Brands like CeraVe, Eucerin, and Neutrogena

are often recommended by dermatologists for problems like dryness, sensitivity, and even eczema and psoriasis. The influencer community, particularly on TikTok, has helped such brands gain momentum and speed up the demand for therapeutic and clinical type skincare from professional brands. As well as disrupting the barrier function,

heightened hygiene measures disrupt the skin’s delicate microbiome balance. This has resulted in a lot of interest in the skin microbiome and this sector has seen much growth during 2021. The skin microbiota is made up of millions

of bacteria, fungi and viruses that play an essential role in the protection against invading pathogens. As the largest organ of the human body, the skin is colonised by beneficial microorganisms and serves as a physical barrier to prevent the invasion of pathogens. In circumstances where the barrier is broken or the balance between commensals and pathogens is disturbed, skin disease or even systemic disease can result.9

antibiotic and also help keep skin acidic, which many germs dislike. Additionally, skin microbes can alert the immune system to harmful bacteria or viruses, and signals from your skin microbiome can activate or de-activate the immune system, promoting healing and controlling inflammation. The composition of the skin microbiome

varies throughout the body and it is affected by many things, including genes, diet and the environment. There is evidence that green spaces can aid our microbiome. An imbalance in the microbiome is known as dysbiosis. Although it is not always clear why dysbiosis occurs, it can be upset by a number of factors, including excessive cleaning, especially with antibacterial products.

An out-of-balance microbiome is linked

to a number of skin health complaints like eczema, acne and rosacea. Skin care actives that support the microbiome are becoming increasingly popular as consumers learn more about its vital function. Silab supplies two such actives: ■ Ecobiotys®, which specifically rebalances the microbiota of mature skin by reinforcing the skin’s immune and mechanical barriers, and acting on the distribution of bacterial communities. It improves skin barrier quality and enhances complexion radiance ■ Lactobiotyl®, a postbiotic active ingredient that targets dry skin by improving the integrity of the skin’s barrier. It activates epidermal renewal while preserving the equilibrium of the cutaneous microbiota, restoring hydration and luminosity

Conclusion People’s habits have changed, possibly forever and certainly for the foreseeable future. These are challenging times for our skin and while additional hygiene measures remain necessary, we will require specialised care to protect and ultimately repair it from the additional daily assaults it faces. Cleansing the hands thoroughly is of course

necessary, so the products we use need to effectively remove germs whilst being as kind to the skin as possible. Wash products can be

efficacious and mild;

sanitisers can provide moisturisation. Providing a caring and moisturising barrier

for our hands and faces from external irritants significantly reduces potential harm while targeted repair solutions can alleviate damage already caused. The personal care industry continues to research solutions and provide ever more efficacious solutions for modern skin care needs.
