Visual Storytelling JUST SLOTS
JOSUÉ AGÜERO Game Producer Just Slots
Rich, decorative visuals mean nothing if players can’t quickly understand the action on screen. Josué Agüero discusses how Just Slots designs every symbol, animation, and colour choice to enhance readability while deepening the atmosphere.
What's your take on the relationship between symbolic elements and background art?
At Just Slots, we don’t just place symbols on reels, we craft worlds. Every reel, icon, character and background is designed to work in harmony, weaving a unified theme that draws players in from the very first spin. Te background sets the stage and immerses the player in the story’s setting, while symbols act as narrative signposts, reinforcing the theme and signalling game mechanics, feature triggers and bonus progression.
Together, these elements do more than decorate the screen. Tey guide the player through the game’s journey, fuelling anticipation for its most thrilling moments. Tis is how Book of Arcane 100 was born, a magical school, with a distinct, serious atmosphere where every element breathes its own story.
Nothing is accidental, the background and symbols are parts of a single picture. Like a table and the objects on it, they work together to create a complete impression, clear both in colour and in monochrome. Te symbols are designed to be instantly readable, making it easy to distinguish a high from a low, a scatter from a wild.
In what ways do animated effects such as cascading reels, win particles and symbol transformations help narrate progress or plot without traditional cutscenes?
In our games, animation is more than movement, it’s storytelling in motion. Instead of relying on static cutscenes, we use cascading reels, win particles and symbol transformations to narrate progress directly through gameplay.

Tese effects heighten anticipation, mark achievements and reveal personality without breaking the flow. For example, in Unholy Mystery, the transformation of mystery symbols builds suspense. Te more mystery symbols in play, the longer the animation lingers, drawing the player into the moment.
In Shogun Skylord, the Free Spins feature begins with a top- bar multiplier reveal, where a spinning animation teases the outcome before the first spin even starts. And Book of Arcane 100, high-value character symbols cast spells in their unique style during wins, letting their personality shine. Tese animations don’t just decorate the screen, they breathe life into the world, making every spin part of the story.
In transforming a slot-game narrative into visual style, what balance do you strike between decorative flair and clarity of gameplay UX?
Striking this balance is a constant collaboration between producers, artists and animators. At Just Slots, our priority is to craft visually rich, immersive games while maintaining an intuitive and readable player interface. Decorative elements should enhance the game‘s gameplay clarity. Every symbol, colour choice and animation is intentionally designed to communicate the game’s tone and mechanics, guiding the player toward key events like big wins or bonus rounds.
Background animations enhance the atmosphere without distracting the player from the reels. Characters are designed to interact only during key triggers, adding charm
