over run allowing the opposition to slide a fortunate 3rd goal in.

With a few more games still to play I’m sure our efforts will continue to prove to be worthwhile and bring even greater success and achievements in the future, well doe gentlemen.

Year 9 The year 9 football team have showed great resilience and grit within their games this year. The performances which the year 9 boys have produced have been outstanding and certainly don’t reflect the outcome of the fixtures. The boys have had close matches with both Kingdown and Lavington School, narrowly missing out on both occasions! The Year 9’s put in a valiant effort against St Augustines, playing with 9 men and only losing 1-0 in the second half. They did extremely well to remain positive and to persistently keep going despite the disadvantage.

There have been some exceptionally performances from the majority who have played, however some individuals have massively stood out! Captain Trysten Hurkett has done a fantastic job organising the team, putting in consistent great performances and remaining positive when the team has been under pressure. Nick Brisdon has showed class scoring some great goals, while Mackenzie Marshman and Nathan Lintern have put in solid defensive performances. Both Noah Coleman and Harry Thorne have also ran their socks off and have both played consistently well!

The year 9 boys now need to ensure they remain positive with their remaining fixtures as their fortunes will change if they keep performing well!

The Year 8 team have been training regularly for their matches after Christmas. Here’s hoping for another successful season!

NETBALL

Year 7 The year 7 girls have been training hard on a Tuesday night since September. It has been lovely to see the girl’s consistently turning up to training and working hard to improve their skills. The team are working hard to improve their skills, while still demonstrating a team ethos.

The competition season started in full force in January against other local schools. The improvement the girls have made since the beginning of the year has been amazing to see. The season kicked off against Kingdown, unfortunately the girls sustained a narrow defeat. However they picked themselves up, decided they had to work as a team and came back fighting. At the end of January, St Laurence came to Matravers to play our year 7 team. After a slow start, the girls decided they needed to improve their passing accuracy. With this they took the lead, sustaining the advantage to the end of the match. Giving the girls their first win of the season!

This excitement and positivity took the team into the beginning of February. Our next match was against Clarendon, winning 9 to 3. I am thoroughly looking forward to the last few matches of the season, including the year 7 tournament. This will be an amazing opportunity to go back and show how much the girls have improved since their last tournament in October. Thank you girls for a wonderful season.

Year 8 The year 8 netball team showed great commitment and resilience by continuously attending training sessions from September, despite the majority of their matches not being until after Christmas. It was great to see many year 7 netballers returning as year 8’s showing the same level of dedication, as well as welcoming many new faces to the team.

Due to the girls’ outstanding dedication and commitment, Matravers have been able to field two netball teams this year, which is a great achievement. The ‘A’ team got off to a strong start in their first two matches, beating Kingdown 13-9 and John of Gaunt 24-4. The girls all played brilliantly and the scores reflect how much they have come on as a team and how well they all work together. Despite their strong start, the girls lost their next game against St Laurence, but remained positive and identified what they needed to focus on in their next training sessions. Taking this positive attitude with them, the girls faced Clarendon for their next match. After a well-matched game, the girls came away with a draw.

Unfortunately, the U13 Netball tournament due to be held at St Augustines on 1st March was cancelled due to the bad weather. Both teams were really looking forward to the tournament and I am sure they will do us all proud when it is rearranged!
