FOREWORD Dear Parents

I am delighted to welcome you to our magnificent Matravers Spring Edition of our Newsletter. Time has certainly flown by since we were last sending out our Christmas Edition! We seem to pack more and more into each Term, delivering not only amazing learning experiences but also wider opportunities for students to thrive and succeed during their time with us. We never take this for granted; it is only hard work every day that makes this happen.

I am writing this after just watching another wonderful Lions Concert in our Theatre. This annual event draws together our wider community and celebrates our youngest through to the oldest members of our school and wider community. The theme for this year’s event was “friendship” and the students sang and performed beautifully. At the end of the event I reflected for the audience on how we view the importance of friendship and partnership across our school communities. We all work extremely hard to ensure that our students are able to succeed; we provide the right conditions and opportunities so that they can shine, whatever their particular talents, interests or passions.

Education is at its best through powerful partnerships when we all work together to help our young people be the best that they can be in life.

Special mention must go to the support that the Lions provide for our community. Their selfless, altruistic approach is surely one that we want to foster in our young people. Our very own Leos demonstrate this through their own diverse contribution, which you can read about further inside.

Reading through this Newsletter you will see a recurring theme emerge of Careers Education. Rightly, there is a great deal of emphasis placed on this aspect by us. Our vision as a school is to:

“…enable our students to gain the highest possible qualifications and equip them with the skills and values that they need to achieve their ambitions on leaving school.”

We aim to ensure that your daughter/son not only works hard and secures great exam results, but also that they have the character to be employable and successful. Our very traditional approaches to education support this extremely well.

The bedrock of traditional education is providing a diverse and thriving extra-curricular or prep programme. This Newsletter captures many of the clubs and societies that have taken place over the last 2 terms. Students take up these opportunities for many different reasons; it may be the opportunity to learn a new skill or be the chance to practice something further. Whatever the reason, our programme has something for everyone and we are delighted that so many engage in this.

The front cover for this edition perfectly captures the essence of how we continually want to broaden the horizons of our students. This stunning picture is taken from our hugely successful Geology trip to Iceland. You can read all about it within the Newsletter, along with all of our other “out & about” experiences.

Shifting the focus closer to home, there has been a tremendous amount of preparation taking place as we prepare for the summer exam season.

The calm and purposeful working environment every day enables this to happen.

Every year we reiterate to students that the only way to succeed is through hard work and dedication. There is no “quick-win” or “shortcut”; you simply have to put in the time and effort over a sustained period and you will be rewarded. Our students can and will be successful as we all support and guide them through this challenging period of their lives.

I do hope that you enjoy this Newsletter and take time to read about all the fantastic things that have taken place over the Spring Term. I know you’ll agree that Matravers continues to be a very special place and we are quite unique in all that we offer for our students.

We demonstrate that traditional and independent approaches, combined with state-sector rigour, support our students to thrive and succeed.

My best wishes for a wonderful Easter and thank you for your continued support and help.

Dr Simon Riding, Headteacher
