GEOLOGY

VALLIS VALE We are surrounded by World Class Geology, one of the many advantages of studying Geology in the West Country! Vallis Vale, situated to the west of Frome is a staple visit for our Geologists, and it just so happens to be an example of one of the most iconic structures in Earth Science! As a Site of Special Scientific Interest it’s an excellent example of an angular unconformity, similar to the famous one in Scotland which James Hutton used to develop the original principals of Geology!

What a way to learn! The students impressively articulated their understanding of plate tectonic mechanisms, erosion and uniformitarianism. They were able to deduce from the rock types and fossil content

LULWORTH COVE The iconic bay is a must visit for budding Geologists and our Year 11 Class spent the day gathering data in order to interpret the Geological history of the area. Don’t let the warm smiles fool you, the south coast in February is very cold! A massive amount of resilience was shown over the day to complete the field studies, with a well-deserved hot chocolate at the end!

that the area was once underwater and located close to the tropics! The fossilised corals are evidence of climate similar to the Bahamas…… if only!

HANSON APPRENTICESHIP OFFER As part of our excellent careers offer Mr Browning organised for local employer HANSON to give a talk advertising their new apprenticeship scheme at the Whatley Quarry. Giving students leaving us after 6th form the opportunity to develop a new skill set on the job. We’re thankful to HANSON for offering our students the opportunity and look forward to developing strong links with the local quarry.
