A LEVEL FRENCH Film study: La Haine
At Advanced level French, students learn the language through an in-depth study of a range of topics such as the cinema, music and politics of France or a French speaking country. Students also study a French film and book to deepen their understanding of francophone culture and undertake an individual research project on an aspect of French life of their choosing.
The film we are studying is called La Haine (Hatred) by French director Mathieu Kassovitz. It tells the story of a single day in the life of three young men of different ethnic backgrounds who live in the Paris suburbs. It shows the boredom of unemployment and the friction between the community and the police and also highlights the differences between life in central Paris and the poorer suburbs. The film is based on true events and is filmed in black and white and although the film is raw and has a shocking ending, there are some real moments of humour throughout.

La haine attire la haine
Je suis comme une petite fourmi perdue dans l’univers intergalactique
‘’As a student who has always had an interest in foreign languages and a craving to learn about the cultures that surround them, French has been the perfect subject for me to pursue. After completing French at GCSE, I wanted to extend my learning, which has led to me to studying French at A Level, a brilliant choice that has enabled me to learn the mechanics and the impacts of the language independently, as well as being a big step towards my vision of becoming a translator.
For me, one of the most enriching and exciting parts of the course is the study of La Haine, a famous French film that has opened my eyes to the colonial history of France and its current tumultuous social problems, portrayed in the film’s gritty cinematography and its true storyline. The French slang and the insight into the lives of three young men living in the suburbs of Paris in the late 20th century puts the past and the present into perspective and is a brilliant part of the course that I am looking forward to delving into further. ‘’
