YEAR 8

The year group has gone from strength to strength following an outstanding start to the year. After some analysis work was carried out on MBU1 data the Year group was already very close to meeting their end of year targets and will be looking to further their achievements in the results from MBU2. Once again comments from teachers throughout the year so far have highlighted the outstanding work the year group is producing, not just within lessons but also outside lessons in extra-curricular activities.

Yet again the inter tutor competitions have been running throughout terms 3 and 4. The weekly competition, linked to behaviour, attendance and achievement, has been closely contested throughout the terms since our return from Christmas with 8.3 and 8.4 having won a term each. Last term also saw sporting inter tutor competitions including Netball and 5-a-side Football. The games were contested in a fair but competitive manner with sportsmanship a common theme with handshakes and “well played” comments coming to the forefront of the competition. 8.3 and 8.6 managed to get themselves into the final for the Football tournament with 8.6 coming out eventual winners. 8.2 and 8.5 contested the final for the Netball with 8.2 becoming the victorious team. Well done to all who played and took part in the competition. All positions in the competitions received points towards the termly competition in which 8.3 were the eventual winners. More pizza and film rewards going the way of 8.3 and 8.4 for the efforts and attitude towards school, great effort and well done.

The number of School Value points that have been awarded to the year group across the six core values has exponentially increased since the last newsletter. The overall values that have been awarded has been last counted at over 12,300 which is a staggering amount

which in turn has culminated in individuals receiving their Matravers School Values badge as they have achieved at least 10 core value points in each of the six core value areas and received postcards home. Just under 800 postcards have been written and sent home for the year group so far. There are also a huge

amount of individuals that are very close to receiving this award and is a testament to how hard the year group is working towards their targets and achieving lots of success and pride along the way. It’s not only this that impresses me but also the continued drive to achieve their own success, after they have achieved the accomplishment of the badge and will no doubt be rewarded, rightfully so, for the endeavours in the future.

Further success was celebrated in the celebration assembly before Christmas. Pupils were awarded on their success in class throughout the different subject areas, as well as highlighting their achievements and their success in attendance, behaviour and attitude towards their subjects. Awards were also given in regards to conduct in and around school and demonstrating the school ethos and school values. Chrimbo Limbo, wrapping the tutor, Christmas sing songs, special mentions from staff about individuals that have gone above and beyond their expectations and bouncing on space hoppers are just a few of the fun and crazy activities pupils had to “endure” over the assembly culminating in some free food in the Canteen. A great time celebrating the success of the year group in terms 1 and 2 was had with lots of chocolate to accompany it all!! What was particularly prodigious to see was the diversity of the winners, not only was there a representation for all tutor groups but the number of individuals recognised was excellent with very few individuals receiving multiple awards identifying the range of success and achievement throughout the year group.

As previously stated in the previous newsletter various activities were planned for this and last term. One such event was our charity event that looked towards raising money for our chosen charity for the year which is Wallace and Gromit’s Children’s Charity based out of Bristol Hospital. Throughout the year all proceeds from charity work will go towards this charity including the recent colour day and future non school uniforms and charity events.
