Drama (continued)

A Level and GCSE Drama Examinations Term 4 was a very busy one for the Drama Department as we prepared our Year 11 and 13 pupils in readiness for the practical examinations they performed to two visiting examiners.

Our Year 13 pupils were the first to perform as they presented an extract from Yasmina Reza’s ‘Art’ which was influenced by the style and working methods of Constantin Stanislavski. In addition to this performance the boys had opted to also present a number of other extracts to their invited audience. All though these extracts were not to be assessed by their examiner, the boys were eager to share to those in attendance the hard work they has undertaken during Terms 2 and 3. The extracts presented were:

- Nathan Chadwick: Art by Yasmina Reza, History Boys by Alan Bennett and Things I Know to be True by Andrew Bovell

- Adan Newman: Art by Yasmina Reza, History Boys by Alan Bennett and One Man, Two Guvnors by Richard Bean

- Cameron Sinden: Art by Yasmina Reza, History Boys by Alan Bennett and The Ferryman by Jez Butterworth

Up next were our Year 11 performing a range of extracts from various plays to their visiting examiner. The Year 11 pupils had been working extremely hard on preparing their work in readiness for the examination alongside also working on preparing themselves for their highly-demanding written exam due to be sat in the Summer term. Those pupils taking part were:

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN KEY STAGE 3? Year 7

Since January all classes have been exploring William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream with the entire year group demonstrating a fantastic appreciation and understanding of the main issues and themes of the play whilst also rising well to the challenge of interpreting the original Shakespearean language. Pupils have worked very well meeting the demands of both the practical and theoretical work presented to them and the department are really excited to keeping challenging this amazing year group in future years.

Year 8 Term 3 has seen a return to script work for Year 8 with all classes exploring Willy Russell’s Our Day Out. The play is about a school trip arranged for a group of deprived children from a Liverpool secondary school which focuses on the harsh reality these children face as they prepare themselves for life after education. It’s not only the pupils who are taught a few home truths; some of the teaching staff are also forced to re-evaluate their own approach to life and treatment of others. The scheme of learning has encouraged our own pupils to carefully consider how they judge and treat people, whilst also asking them how strongly they value the education they are given.

Year 9 With the jump from Key Stage 3 to Key Stage 4 looming, we have used this academic year to introduce the Year 9 pupils to the expected work ethic of the GCSE Drama course. This has been realised through the introduction of the skills, understanding and knowledge needed for success in all three components of the GCSE specification. On the whole the year has been a great success in enabling the teachers to demonstrate to the pupils the need for them to take on the added responsibilities that the GCSE specification requires of them.
