DRAMA
NATIONAL THEATRE CONNECTIONS 2018
Matravers Drama Department were delighted to see our Young Company present Brad Birch’s The Blue Electric Wind twice during Term 4. The pupils performed both on the Matravers Theatre stage and at the egg, Theatre Royal Bath, with both performances earning high acclaim from the large audiences in attendance.
Connections is the National Theatre’s nationwide youth theatre festival. Each year it offers a unique opportunity for youth theatres and school theatre groups to stage new plays written for young people by some of theatre’s most exciting playwrights, and to perform in leading theatres across the UK.
As part of our involvement in the Connections Festival the pupils performed to a visiting National Theatre director who was tasked with providing our performers and designers feedback on their work. The director “found them to be a passionate, driven and intelligent group of performers who had clearly really engaged with the challenges of the play” and also noted the company “have really engaged with this process and when we chatted after the show they spoke eloquently about their research around and development of their characters”. As well as our 11 fantastic performers we were fortunate to have two amazing young designers as part of the production. In response to their work the director said, “lighting and sound design for the show has been done by students who should be congratulated for their amazingly detailed work. There are some really beautifully subtle moments of LX and SFX design in the show”.
It has been a real pleasure to provide our pupils with this unique opportunity to experience the life and work of a professional theatre company. We are extremely thankful to all at the National Theatre, Theatre Royal Bath, Mr Tom Young and Dr Riding for the support that have continuously given the Matravers Young Company.

‘Blood Brothers’ Trip The Drama Department organised a trip to see the critically acclaimed West End smash hit Blood Brothers during January as an extra-curricular opportunity for our pupils to see the ever-popular production on the professional stage. It was a delight to take a group of eager and excited pupils from Years 9-13 whom were a real credit to our school. We hope that by watching this performance the students were provided with a highly engaging experience, which will develop their understanding of live theatre and ensure they have a wealth of new knowledge and understanding to bring into both their practical and theoretical work.
