SCIENCE

This is an exciting time for science, with science week happening from the 12 – 16 of March there have been a lot of exciting events going on in science!

SUPER DEMONSTRATIONS The science teachers had the opportunity to shine (sometimes more literally than others) with some amazing demonstrations to show the sheer power and intrigue of science. During lunchtimes; we set off some rockets, poured water on a chip pan fire (for safety reasons), set off some cannon fire, cut open some rats, made things really cold with solid carbon dioxide and setting teachers on fire. All in the name of science!

SCIENCE WEEK IN CLASS Year 7 – 9 have been discovering some amazing things in their science lessons. They have been developing their own investigations to find out a range of solutions to proposed problems such as ‘what materials should we make astronauts nappies from’ to ‘what is the issue with singe use plastics’.

On top of this, they have all been given the opportunity to enter the national science week poster competition where they have to make a poster in A3 or A4 and submit it to their science teachers. The best 5 posters will then be submitted to the national competition with various prizes being given out to the very best. Good luck Key Stage 3!

With people like GSK demonstrating how they can use natural ingredients found in rainforests to help make medicine and JCB showing off their partnership with Williams F1 by bringing along a formula 1 car, there was loads to see and do. It also gave them a fantastic chance to look at possible career choices in the future, with various universities showing off different paths from being a doctor (by looking at a mock operating theatre, with a real pig autopsy) to musical engineering by given them the opportunity to make novel and new instruments. A fun time was had by all, and the bus on the way home was full of students excitedly sharing stores about the things that they had discovered on their trip.

THE BIG BANG FAIR We took 50 of our best KS3 students to the national Big Bang Fair. This was an amazing opportunity for them to get up close and personal with some of the best companies and universities for science and engineering.
