Has the recession hit competitive shooting?
AS WE ARE NOW more than six months into the year, we thought it might be interesting to look at competition entries at the half-year point as compared to the same period in 2009. The accompanying chart shows a very interesting picture, especially as the timing of competitions is very similar year on year. Although in some disciplines the variation in numbers is small, this year on year comparison does seem to add weight to the argument that shooters are being more selective, or even choosing not to enter many of the events they may have attended in previous years. It is perhaps quite understandable,
given the current recession and the uncertain times we are living through, that competitive clay shooting may also be feeling the impact of the current economic climate, especially given the ever increasing cost of fuel, accommodation, cartridges and all the other elements that go into entering competitions. The shooting press has been full of
stories lately regarding the effect of the recession on game-shooting and we hear
8 | PULL! September 2010
that the current economic climate is driving a number of shoots to seriously scale back their activities. Even gamekeeper positions are being made redundant at record levels! It should therefore come as no surprise that similar pressures are at work

within the clay shooting community. We will continue to monitor this trend and
later in the year, once the dust has fi nally settled on the competition season, publish a more complete picture with a detailed analysis of numbers attending by discipline.
