team selection shoot took place at Spennymoor Gun Club on 1 August attracting a field of over 120 competition shooters and over 60 target only entrants. The 12 stand layout comprised of a mixture of loopers, crossers, overheads and battues, with two stands featuring five simultaneous pairs apiece and proved testing to even the most experienced of shooters. As we have come to expect from Spennymoor the shoot ran without

Universal Trench
J F Griffin reports David (Fred) Thornley was selected to shoot for Great Britain in the Universal Trench World Championship at Valle Aniene, near Rome. After three days enduring 40 degree temperatures, the shooting was over. He’d given his cartridges away before they called a three-way shoot-off to settle the veterans bronze medal. An Italian, a Portuguese and Cheshire veteran David [Fred] Thornley in his cold water filled hat lined up below the clubhouse. Fortunately the plucky Brit prevailed and he was able to get a foot on the podium. Congratulations to David (Fred) who showed true Cheshire spirit, determination and skill on the international stage.
Cheshire ZZ , Rugby, 17 July
ZZ, (Zig-Zag) Helice, (Propeller) Electro Cible, (electric target) – call it what you will – the game simulates live pigeon trap shooting. For the uninitiated, the target is a white plastic ‘clay’ centre clipped on to a two wing plastic propeller. There are five traps and 27 yards from the centre trap is the shooting mark and with a perimeter fence around the whole layout. On calling, a trap throws its target randomly from a fast-spinning motor and the target simulates the erratic flight of a pigeon that’s not keen on being shot. To register a ‘kill’ the plastic disc must be separated from its ‘wings’ and fall inside the perimeter fence. If it falls outside, it is ‘lost’. Cheshire were generously sponsored with

a hitch with all of the scorers and ground staff doing their utmost. High gun for the day was a tie between PD Foster and G Rushworth, both of whom finished on a very creditable 92. Top junior shooter on the day was M T Burnand who carded a respectable 89 as did K Kipling who was the highest scoring Vet. Lyn James celebrated her recent call up to the England team by finishing as the top lady shooter on the day with a 73.
cartridges now! Marcus also happens to be in the GB team for ZZ and is an ex-British Champion: illustrious company! Well, you would have been proud of your
Cheshire lads. John Barnett shot an unbeatable 18 ex 20 to take the Cheshire Championship, followed by Jack Gradwell on 16 ex 20. John attributes his burgeoning skill at ZZ to rat shooting in darkened barns with a .410 as a lad. These places also took first and second in the Open Shoot: a good result. Next event was a five target pool for vast
amounts of money. This is normally where the gloves come off and the shooting starts. Three guns shot five straight, no mean achievement: Jack Gradwell, Marcus Iddon and Mike Vere-Hodge. Next it’s a five-bird miss and outshoot sudden death shoot-off. Jack went first and shot another five straight; Marcus was next, missed his first target and was eliminated. Mike went last, missed his third target and was eliminated, so the winner of the large amount of money was Jack Gradwell. A clean sweep for your Cheshire heroes! A big thank you goes to John Nightingale for his hospitality and organisation and his ever caustic wit!
