Serious fun in Kazan

I had put in over the years. All the early starts and cold mornings training all seem worth every second when you get to stand on the podium representing your country.” The Trap junior men’s team also came away with bronze. Shona Marshall and Charlotte Kerwood were each a tantalising one target off 68, which made the flash final, but their combined efforts, along with Anita North, paid off with a team silver medal. Young Esme Sparey was the star of the trap show. Still only 17, she took the gold medal. Having gone into the finals in front, Esme kept the advantage beating Ana Rodrigues (POR) by one target. Not sure who was more excited, Esme or her father, ‘Curly’! The Double Trap fielded a senior men’s team of

European Championships, Kazan, Russia THE TRIP TO THE European Championships for the ISSF disciplines in Kazan was somewhat of an adventure! If your team arrived and departed on the right flight at the right time with all their guns then it was a result in itself!! Some got their guns in but not out, some struggled to get their guns in at all, but that’s Customs for you. However, the organisers of the event could not have done more to ensure it was a success, with some 70 volunteers, two of whom were allocated to the GBR team, acting as guides/translators/fixers, what a difference they made to the trip and the ground was a picture. All the male shooters certainly enjoyed the sights; there was not an unattractive woman to be seen! But to the shooting, and what a tremendous success it was for the GBR team. Three gold and two silver medals in the individuals plus two silver and three bronze medals for the teams.

The European Champions had a total of 347 competitors from 37 nations, with GBR fielding the second largest team. The first to start was Trap, with Brad Davis and Aaron Heading for the senior men; Tom Ward, Scott Morgan and Callum McMillan for the junior men; Shona Marshall, Charlotte Kerwood and Anita North senior women, with Esme Sparey the sole representative for the junior women. It has to be said the trap team had a difficult trip, arriving late after a long flight, no rest day, just straight into the official practice day. The seniors struggled, but the juniors it seems, did not: Tom Ward, took full advantage of his last year in juniors, taking the silver medal. Tom said: “Russia without a doubt has been my greatest achievement to date. Coming away with a silver medal was a great reward for the hard work

Peter Wilson, Steve Scott and Steve Walton who came away with the team bronze medal, only four targets behind Russia, who in turn were nine targets off a strong Italian team. Peter Wilson, now ranked 17th in the world, kept up his good form by taking silver in the individual event, four targets off the Italian, Francesco d Aiello (191 ex 200) and just one target ahead of the Swede, Hakan Dahlby (ranked 9th), who took bronze after a shoot-off with Russian Vasily Mosin (ranked 11th). Peter and Ian Coley’s smiles speak for themselves!

For Skeet, Elena Allen lead the field for the senior
