CLA Game Fair

Fun at the Fair

Excellent weather, massed crowds, have a go stands, plenty of family entertainment and a climactic Champion of Champions competition, this year’s CLA Game Fair had something for everyone.

R

agley Hall in Warwickshire proved to be a popular venue for the event, with more than 144,000 visitors attending over three days. CPSA staff were kept busy on the stand, signing up new members, chatting to visitors, selling branded merchandise and encouraging people to ‘have a go’ on the clayline. CLA clayline instructors hardly stopped for breath as hundreds of visitors, young and old, queued up to try their hand at clay shooting – some for the fi rst time.

Again, the Purdey Sporter was available and many visitors elected to have a go with it. A couple of shooters were so impressed that they went straight to the Purdey stand to make serious enquiries!

For the second year running the Land Rover sponsored event proved to be a highlight of the Game Fair. The format this year allowed for the 32 entrants, nominated by their counties, to shoot the fi rst qualifying targets on both Friday and Saturday in the morning. From this the nine shooters from Friday and the

top eleven from Saturday morning went through to the quarter fi nal to shoot 40 targets. The outcome determined who would be in the semi-fi nal of ten, leading to the fi nal fi ve to shoot for the excellent prizes sponsored by Land Rover and the CPSA. On the Saturday, the number had been whittled down and 18 of the country’s top shots competed for the silverware. Each shooter showed off their skills at the 40 targets in front of a huge crowd in the main arena, aiming to win a place in the quarter fi nal where the top ten would shoot again to win a place in the semi fi nal line-up of fi ve shooters. The fi rst squad consisted of N Shelton, M Russell, Andy Bennett, and Paul Lovick, each tackling the targets which consisted of a left to right crosser, right to left crosser, a tricky long fast teal and an awkward left to right looper. It was Bennett who led having shot 34 ahead of Russell, Lovick and Shelton. Next up was Steve Lovatt, D Wincott, Matt Pugh and Chris Broomfi eld. Lovatt and Pugh both scored 34 whilst Wincott
