Old Man Reynolds shows them the way

Veteran shot Martin Reynolds proved that experience and a cool head can win over youth and enthusiasm when he claimed the title to the 2010 FITASC County Championship. The course at Southern Counties was set out over four layouts, two on the Brick Towers and two on the Ponds layouts. Martin started the day on the stiff Ponds layouts, meaning his halfway score was not looking great against the main competition of Andy Herbert-Smith, Mark Edwards, John Hatchard, Stuart Holland, Mark Cassel and Rob Burleigh. However, once Martin reached the second of the softer Brick Tower layouts, he was able to stamp his authority on this demanding discipline by shooting the only perfect 25 of the day to finish on an 82 against Andy Herbert-Smith’s 80, Mark Edwards and Stuart Hollands 78, John Hatchard and Mark Cassel’s 77 with Rob Burleigh two behind on 75 finishing seventh overall and picking up valuable Supreme Championship points.

Pennington calms the gales

Competitors in the Dorset County Sportrap Championships had to battle the elements and contend with clays being seriously buffeted by the wind. Early leader Stuart Rudling set the pace shooting straight through on the four layouts set up on the trap and skeet area. His rounds of 22/20/24/25 – total 91 – were excellent in the rough conditions and looked the likely winner again this year as Richard King could only produce 20/20/20/24 shooting 84 in the same squad. Later in the morning Colin Pennington was back on form with 23/24/21/23 and tying with Stuart on 91. After the last squad was back in the clubhouse a shoot-off was called to decide this year’s Dorset Sportrap Champion but it soon became clear that Stuart had already left the

ground some time before which gave Colin the title and trophy. Top Vets Eric Nix and Neil King came home with a 69 as did top Lady Lorraine Waters.

Lopez is back

Paul Lopez has made a welcome return to clay shooting this month and has proved that he has not lost any of the old magic, although Paul thought he had blown it shooting a 21 on his last round, but Rob Burleigh missed his last target to bring the Championship to a shoot-off. A faultless 25 straight then secured Paul his first Dorset title and deny Rob not only the title, but the ten valuable supreme points which he so desperately needed to stand any chance of winning the Supreme Championship. It was looking likely that Rob would close the gap quite nicely on myself who started with a poor 17 to Rob and Paul’s 23 but, after taking notice of Martin Reynolds old school approach in the FITASC, I decided to keep my head down and push on regardless which resulted in a 22/23/24 which brought me back to finish in third spot and collect another seven points. Sorry Rob, but thank you Martin me old mate. The ladies’ honour was held up by Sandy Aylwin making the step from DTL and Simone Cunningham having a go at a trap discipline for a change.

Burleigh takes it to the end

Rob Burleigh had a double reason to take part in the Double Trap County Championship as he not only wanted to win back the title he had won in 2004 and 2007, but also needed as many points as possible towards his Supreme Championship title chase and with Dorset’s Peter Wilson off shooting the World Double Trap Championships, a win and 10 points were up for grabs. With a score of 115/150, Rob dominated this discipline as his closest rival and Supreme points chaser Mark Cassel could only manage 93/150, followed home by Jim Nutland and, having a go at DT for the first time, was myself and Rob Weller holding up the rear. Well done Rob.

Supreme Championship

Now that all 12 of the Dorset County Championships have been run and the points collated, it is clear that in order to win you have to take part in as many rounds as possible, or at least win points in as many round as possible, something Rob Burleigh just fell short of by not scoring points in three of the twelve rounds, leaving him five points, or one sixth place finish in OSK, OT or DTL short of a Championship title tie with myself. Mark Cassel came home in third place after scoring points in ten of the twelve rounds and Eric Nix notched up enough top nine places to claim top vet.

Hampshire County Skeet Championships 2010

Donna Handley Hampshire ladies Skeet Champion 2010

www.cpsa.co.uk

On Sunday 25 July, the Hampshire County Skeet Championships got underway at the Fareham Clay Target Club. The early starters experienced a fine but overcast sky with little wind to trouble them. As the day progressed the weather brightened up and the breeze at times created some challenging targets. An overall disappointing attendance with a total of 23, 17 of which were Hampshire shooters, making up a total of five squads. The Hampshire man on form at the moment had little challenge from any opposition, apart from his own son Miles Fleming, who was hot on his heels throughout and came in second as the Hampshire junior Skeet Champion with a respectable

score of 97, one point behind his father Martyn Fleming, the 2010 Hampshire Skeet Champion on 98. The veterans Skeet Champion was John Mallon and the ladies Skeet Champion was Donna Handley. Up and coming contenders for next year’s championships could well be Alan Saunders and Mark Pearce who both put in scores of 95. I would like to thank Fareham Clay Target Club for arranging competent referees for this event. This was a welcome change from previous shoots where the standard of some of the refereeing has been questionable. This was not the case and I would like to thank those referees for their excellent work. Well done to the 2010 Champions and also to all of those that have
