barrels, but perhaps the hardest of all was a very softly thrown midi that emerged from the shooters left just 15 feet away and then literally dropped into the water like a stone no more than a few yards away. Right from the word go, George was leading

the pack, shooting 50 straight on the fi rst day over the Rizzini and Eurotarget layouts, whilst Christophe Auvret (winner of the European FITASC) was just one adrift as were Ben Husthwaite and Martin Papworth. Pet Easton was the leading GB lady on 41, with

Amidst blazing temperatures the globe’s most accomplished Sporting shot took on the cream of the crop to take his 17th title at the World FITASC in Italy. Don Brunt was there to see the drama unfold.

A MASSIVE ENTRY of well over 1100 shooters had made the journey to Laterina near the town of Arezzo in Tuscany for the 32nd running of the World Championships. With four days of intense competition ahead of them in temperatures that would make even a Bedouin wince, it was clear it was not going to be a walk in the park. The targets for the shoot had been set by Veniero

Spada, and a very good job he did with a good mix of targets across the eight layouts equipped with 136 Promatic traps testing the shooters’ ability to read speed and distance without testing their eyesight. There were also a few of Spada’s trademark very close in targets to be seen, including some low targets that skimmed in towards the shooter over the water of the large lake around which the Promatic and Rizzini layouts were situated. These ‘one shot’ targets proved

Cheryl Hall on 40, but both had some catching up to do as they had six others ahead of them with Beatriz Lappara leading on 45. Chris Papworth and Sam Green looked good in juniors just one target adrift of leader Michael Spada whilst in vets John Pool led the way on 47. If day one had been torture by temperature then

day two was even worse with an incredible 113 being recorded in the shade at lunchtime in the trade village. As this was the highest point on the ground and the area where the breeze was felt most, it suggested that out on the layouts the heat would be even more oppressive. George though was continuing to fi re on all cylinders, fi nishing Krieghoff and Benelli without a single mistake to make it 100 straight, he even seemed immune to the glare of the sun which was causing more than a few problems to some of the competitors when it came to picking up the birds. Ben wasn’t far behind on 97 though Papworth (93) had slipped down the order and now it was Martin Myers (94) who was the next Brit in the line up tying for fourth. Martin Papworth may have fallen down the table a little but Chris Papworth was still very much in the hunt in juniors, sharing second on 90, just three away from Spada, Cheryl Hall also had a better day, now just one behind new leader Stefanie Steinkraus though in vets Pool had been demoted to fi fth as Graham Stirzaker and John Bidwell took the lead. Colin Foden also had a good day in super vets fi nishing just one behind Michael Taylor of the US. Elfi pa is a name George will

remember for some time as it was on that layout that his
