Why do referees have to be members of the CPSA? A query for you which, I am not sure if this is within your remit, or whether it is a board policy issue. It was raised by a committee member at a North Region committee meeting & I as the chair was tasked with raising it with HQ. The query is why do referees have to be members of the CPSA? I think the main issue is that to attend a CPSA ref’s course you need to be a clubman member, and that this is causing problems getting ex-shooters or shooters who are non-members to attend courses. Obviously, once a person has attended a course there is no requirement for them to continue as a members of the CPSA to retain their ref’s certifi cate.

The CPSA responds If a referee wants his/her qualifi cation validated, then they must be current CPSA members. As soon as they become
a lapsed member, their professional indemnity insurance becomes void as does their qualifi cation. It is in their interest to remain a member (albeit a Clubman member). At £32 per year, it is a ‘no- brainer’ for the professional indemnity insurance alone.

Well done! There are recurring themes in the CPSA and one of those is how to get more people interested in the sport and joining the CPSA. I would like to say that if every shooting ground had someone like Craig Sipos running it then the future would look very bright. I turned up unannounced at Barby Sporting (near Rugby) with my brother-in-law (Matthew), who has never held a shotgun before, more in hope than expectation. Despite running a registered competition
shoot and being down on staff Craig worked out a way to send us both out with Ryan, a championship winning gun himself,

Another excellent issue! The balanced article by Laura Saunsbury and the write-ups on The English Open Skeet championship, the Benelli Sp’Auto event and the ISSF World Cup – all very good. Also noteworthy was ‘What they
shot....’ on page 20 – Perazzi, Beretta, Kreighoff, Blaser, Baikal! It just goes to show that whatever the gun and whatever the cost, pointed in the right direction it will kill the clay!
