ONCE AGAIN THERE was a strong contingency of shooters who travelled out to Rome for the World UT Championships. The shooting ground was not unknown to our shooters having shot there several times previously. The ground was not the easiest for our shooters in the past and was going to prove so yet again. The competition was held over three days
with 252 shooters competing for the title of World Champion. With temperatures soaring well into the 90s, the fi rst day of competition saw a variety of scores coming in. There were only two 75 straights, Spanish senior Azpeitia Beristan and Italian veteran Marco Vaccari, with numerous shooters closely following on 74, including GB veteran Kevin Borley. The second day of shooting saw no
change in temperatures, although there was a very brief torrential downpour with thunder and lightning. At the end of the second day there was a change in the leader board. Italian senior Gianluca Muoio shot 75 straight putting him on 149 with the Spaniard Beristain closely following on 147. Kevin Borley had taken the lead in the veteran’s class on 146 with Fred Thornley, a new cap, third, on 141. The junior class was being closely contested with Spaniard Cortes Fortes on 144 and Tom Ward 143, Mark Shaw and Scott Morgan on 142. The senior team, Nigel Caves, Rod Gould and Chris Tate were in close contention to get into the medals as were the veteran team consisting of Kevin Borley, Chris Darvel and Fred Thornley. The super veterans Joey Jones, John Nightingale and Fletcher Watson were in bronze position as were the ladies, Sue Bate, Trudy Yardy and Mary Rowley. The juniors, Callum McMillan, Scott Morgan and Tom Ward were also in bronze position with one day to go. At the close of the fi nal day, Italian, Gianluca Muoio having shot 48 took the

title of World Champion with a total of 197. Kevin Borley held on to his lead to take the veteran World title with 191. Fred Thornley took the bronze medal after a shoot-off with Italian shooter, Vaccari and Portuguese shooter Ferreira Couto all on 186. Steve Ling had just missed out on the shoot-off for bronze by one target. The juniors had been hotly contested with Tom Ward taking the gold medal on 191, Mark Shaw took the bronze medal with 188 and Scott Morgan in fourth just one target behind on 187. The senior team took the bronze medal
on the fi nal day pushing the Portuguese team into fourth. Veteran team also took bronze position, as did the super veteran’s team. The junior team having shot consistently also took the bronze medal. Yet again, our UT shooters have brought
home the medals so congratulations to one and all.
