Well that’s all the 2010 Wiltshire championships completed and I would like to thank all who have attended these events on behalf of the Wiltshire committee, now it’s time to get started on the intercounty finals and take on all those other counties and show them how good we are and that all the hard work during the summer has paid off.

Sportrap Wiltshire Championship 18 July Southern Counties

Harry Hair took his second Wiltshire championship of the year, having won the Allround in June. Starting off with a 22/25 it was a good solid start with Will Thatcher matching him and next up was Pete North with 20 then came round two with Harry posting an 18 and Pete North a 23, it looked like he may have blown it but followed it up with 23 and a 24 to finish having missed the easiest target on the layout (Harry’s words) to end up with a 87/100 a very good recovery with Pete North on 86 and Will Thatcher 84. We look forward to seeing all who took part in this event at the intercounty final on 17 October at Southern Counties so please make sure I have your contact details to enable me to enter you in the team.

the next squad and we all went into panic mode as Ollie ran off to get his gun and cartridges etc and I went to inform the officials that he was on his way as a 69 qualified for the finals. The next round was a layout of 40 targets a bit like a big pool shoot with on report targets and simo shot from five different positions on a line and as Ollie settled in it was clear he could do it and finished on 34/40, to get through to the semi final against nine other county champions, where he progressed on to the final against four others. By the mid point, he was one target ahead and held on to that until he missed the last target, a very mean teal, to tie on 35/40, which meant a sudden death shoot-off with Martin Doughty with third place going to Richard Faulds. In the shoot-off, the first pair were killed by both then the same again, but on the third pair Martin Doughty pair lost and it was up to Ollie and it went kill/lost and Ollie had done it, even though Ollie’s cartridge ejector had broken and he was digging them out with a screwdriver, but not even that put him off! After about five hours of shooting the reward is five days in Barcelona in five star accommodation, the best restaurants and transported by a posh Land Rover for two persons. Enjoy it, you deserve, it well done.

Automatic Ball Trap Wiltshire Championship 25 July Southern Counties

Dave Allen won this one to add to his many Wiltshire Championships over the years in many disciplines shooting 23 24 22 24 to finish on 93/100 having gone into the final round tying with Gary Morgan on 69/75 with myself one target behind on 68 but Gary had a rough final round with 18 and I shot a 23 to move into second spot with 91 and Gary third on 87. This was a very enjoyable competition with great weather and the normal slick running of the event by Southern Counties and its a very good discipline to enable you to move up to the faster targets after DTL. Overall high gun was Hampshire shooter Phil Eames posting a 96 well done to him and we now look forward to the intercounty final to be held at Southern Counties on 31 October. We do have a few places in the team available so please do make contact if you would like to be part of it.

Dave Allen ABT Champion

This being the first of many intercounty finals held in excellent conditions with the temperature around 20 degrees, fairly overcast so no dazzling sun to look at and shot over 14 stands. Our senior team finished third with Will Thatcher, our top scorer, on 95/100 followed by Steve Gray 88, Mark Fletcher 87, Pete North and John Peck both on 86. The vets team came in second behind Cornwall with Harry Hair our top vet with a score of 87, Pete North 86 and Chris Turvey 77. The ladies team comprised of just two ladies who were Helen Weston and Pauline Stokes scoring 67 and 63 respectively and finishing joint fourth with Hampshire taking the honours. Unfortunately we could not muster up a junior team even though we are paying all entry fees this year. Come on all you budding champions, make yourself known to us. Thanks to all that turned out to shoot for Wiltshire, it is appreciated.

Ollie Baker took on all the English Sporting county champions from all over the country including Olympic Champion Richard Faulds MBE, Richard King top England competitor and many more top shots, to come out on top after a very hard day’s shooting starting with an 80 target sporting layout. When I asked Ollie how it went he said OK but not good enough to get through to the next stage, I shot a 71. But as Ollie headed off into the large crowds over the loud speaker the name Ollie Baker was called for
