Well done Spennymoor and District Gun Club by John Adams, CPSA No 12635
I recently took three lady novices along to Spennymoor and District gun club to have a go at clay target shooting to see if they would like to take up the sport. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved who did what they could to make the experience a very enjoyable day for the ladies, especially the ground manager Dave Irwin. The club also supplied a trophy for the top scoring novice which was a very kind gesture. Everyone was very helpful and friendly with special thanks to David Magill who gave up his time to coach the ladies. I would have no reservations in recommending Spennymoor to anyone who is thinking of taking up the sport of clay shooting.
Any grounds contemplating lead mining?
Peter at Coniston Shooting Ground would like to offer his recent experiences with any other grounds contemplating lead mining at their own facilities. Having recently been involved in a joint venture with a lead mining fi rm, Peter feels that the advice he can offer could save considerable time and expense for anyone thinking of undergoing a similar project and as such would urge any interested parties to get in contact with him via all of the usual means: 01756 748586 or

John Norris Shield at Penrith and District Gun Club (by Caroline Gunning)
On a blustery June day members of Penrith & District Gun Club gathered to compete in the clay pigeon target discipline of Automatic Ball Trap (ABT) for the John Norris Shield. With fi ve squads, the fi eld was wide open as to the skill of the member on the day. It was very close with several scores of 47/50 in already, but at the last moment long standing club member David Wright, from Barrow-in Furness, fi nished on 48/50. He was especially pleased as, not only was it the fi rst time he had scored 25/25 on one round, but to take home the shield on his birthday was an extra treat.
A 100 target all round open was held at Park Lodge Shooting School, East Yorkshire on Saturday 17 July. First of all, I would like to say a big thank you to all the people who turned out to take part in the charity shoot. On what can only be described as a challenging day. Due to the high winds making the targets very awkward to hit, the class of shooting was, under the circumstances, very good. In fi rst place with an impressive 85/100 was S Linley closely followed by I Ainsley on 83/100, in third place was W Stables who shot 82/100 and in joint fourth were N Smith and S Midgley, both of whom scored 79/100. I would like to thank Brosgills Opticians, Pontefract, Keyhole Services & Master Locksmiths Ltd, Doncaster and MPC Northern Group Ltd, Maltby, for sponsoring the shoot and also a big thank you to Peter Firth for securing the aforementioned sponsorship. Finally, the day would not have run so smoothly if it wasn’t for the dedicated team of referees and all the extra staff who helped during the day.
North of England Skeet team (by Eric Bell)
The fi nal selection shoot for the North Region Skeet Team, along with the Merseyside and Lancashire Championships took place at Coniston shooting ground on Sunday 25 July. As expected it was a well attended event with seven squads competing. High gun and Lancashire Champion was Robert Jones with 99, closely followed by Billy Perry with 98. The Merseyside Champion was Steve Frost with 97; all very good scores in tricky conditions. The ladies high gun was Daniela Verela with 93 and runner up Wendy Taylor with 92.
The North of England Skeet team is therefore as follows: Seniors – Billy Perry, Barry Bell Jr, Garry Cooke, Nigel Hirst, Paul James, Paul Dodd, Luke Worsley, Justin Stannard, Dave Deacon, Mick Pollard. (Reserves Mark Hunter and Richard Beaumont). Veterans – Robert Jones, Roger Beaumont, Barry Bell Sr (Reserve Eric Bell). Ladies – Daniela Verela, Christine Lancaster, Sue Tyas
Unfortunately we do not have a junior team in 2010, but hope that there will be some interest next year. It also worth mentioning that James Tinkler would have been in the team, but unfortunately has suffered a serious ankle break and will not be fi t in time. Our best wishes, James, for a speedy recovery. The team shirts this year are sponsored by Kildwick Cleaning Company and our thanks go to Paul Dodd.
