Our career journeys

Hannah Jeffery global brand copywriter, STA Travel

❛ 24

I joined STA Travel in 2005 after getting an entirely unconnected degree (who doesn’t have one of those?!), an extended gap year, brief careers picking fruit and working on dive boats, and sheer panic about what I wanted to do! I love that about the travel industry – you’re already half-qualified by the experiences you’ve had. Starting as a travel expert in Nottingham while studying for an MA, it’s testament to STA Travel – the people, the vibe, the opportunities – that 10 years later, I’m still in travel. Making the move from sales to head office via a chance secondment as a brochure writer, today I’m responsible for how we sound as a brand. The only writer among a dozen or so designers (they love me, Me: ‘Can I have more words?’, Them: ‘No, we need more images!’), we do everything in-house. Day to day, this could be anything from storyboarding a video to editing a magazine. I have always loved writing, and sometimes I can’t quite believe that it’s turned into a career.

After finishing my A-levels I started my career in 2013 as a marketing apprentice with the product team. The idea of learning on the job while gaining experience and getting a qualification was perfect. My interview at Cruise.co.uk was with two executives who’d also started on the apprenticeship programme and I was inspired by their success stories. After completing the apprenticeship and qualifying I became a product assistant and after three years and more qualifications I was promoted to leading my own team. My current role involves being responsible for my team and maintaining the key relationship between the company and cruise lines, and ensuring the growth of cruise sales by creating a successful marketing strategy in the form of emails, pay-per-click, website strategy and promotion or direct mail. One key aspect of my role is helping my team develop, not only to make them successful, but happy as well. That is something I take much pride in.
