Hema Odedra

Hema completed an apprenticeship in business administration with Virgin Holidays and was promoted from contract assistant to Far East product services executive

Since we last spoke, I applied for and was successful in moving to another position with Virgin for the Far East. Prior to this, I had just come back from a month off to travel across the Far East, which was amazing. My new job title is assistant destination manager. The main difference is that instead of assisting the destination manager in an admin-based role, I now take ownership of managing the product and the relationships. There’s a lot more decision-making and input involved, which I love. What I enjoy most is the variety and diversity of my day-to-day jobs, and the people I work with. The apprenticeship gave me a head start in my chosen career and helped me gain years of valuable experience ahead of others my age who may have decided to go down other routes such as further education.

Gerasimos Margelis

Gerasimos became ABTA’s second intern after gaining a master’s degree in international tourism marketing at the University of Surrey. He is now a pay-per-click account executive with digital marketing company Tekpaw

ABTA’s internship was my first exposure to the tourism industry in the UK and it helped me see the whole sector from the highest level. I gained a holistic picture of tourism, which I never had the chance to see before, which is useful in my current job, particularly when I research industry trends. My role mainly entails advertising tourism-related products and services including holidays, flights and hotels. I manage various advertising accounts on different platforms, and I have to bid in real time and constantly optimise my campaigns for maximum profit. In the short term, I am looking for an opportunity with a tour operator that will allow me to develop my knowledge and skills. Long term, I plan to start my own tourism business in Greece, especially in my home town of Lefkada.
