CASE STUDY

du Soleil and Masterchef. MSC Cruises follows the ethos ‘Think global, act local’, which allows decisions to be made locally by the people who know the markets and, most importantly, the clientele. This year, following

feedback from travel agents and consumers, MSC Cruises announced that in 2018 it would homeport a ship in Southampton. MSC Magnifica will be

based in Southampton from March to October 2018, operating voyages to the Mediterranean and northern Europe. The company moved

to a state-of-the-art office near Heathrow in October 2016 as part of its planned expansion. The office is home to MSC Cruise Management, which operates and manages the MSC Cruises fleet, as well as MSC Cruises UK & Ireland,

the commercial side of the business which looks after the product and all the British and Irish passengers who travel on MSC ships. This includes a contact centre to assist with bookings for agents and consumers. Opportunities with the company, which is in an unprecedented period of growth including the launch of two ships in 2017, are considerable, with positions available at sea and on land.

CHRIS KNOWLES maritime support officer I started working at MSC Cruise Management in February this year, in my first land-based role. Prior to this I worked at sea for seven years, starting as a deck cadet in 2010 and completing my Chief Mate licence last year. To be a deck officer you have to be an all-rounder as it’s 100 smaller jobs all rolled into one. My job now is to provide support to the fleet, to give advice and to communicate to all the relevant heads of department. If I was to list key skills for my role I would say to be calm, focused, a good communicator and also to be good with numbers. The best thing about my role is the opportunities it offers. My seven years at sea were an amazing start to my career, and allowed me to develop so many skills that I use every day in my new role. At MSC there are so many opportunities for an open-minded, driven person. And with 10 new ships to be delivered over the next 10 years, it’s a great time to be part of this exciting company.
