Pip Stone training strategy & development manager, Eurostar

I joined Eurostar when I was 16 and completed a four-year advanced apprenticeship in engineering before becoming a senior team member at our main depot at Temple Mills in Leyton, East London. My duties involved day-to-day maintenance and inspections, and after a year in that role I became a team technician. We used to have 25 trains but have brought in 17 new and eight refitted trains, and with the introduction of this new fleet I was given the opportunity to assist the training department with their initial assessment of the training requirements. I enjoyed the challenge and the change, and a two-month job ended up lasting for 18 months. I decided to stay with training and took up my new role overseeing all rolling stock training for about 300 people at Temple Mills. I’m enjoying ensuring we have the training strategy in place, and hope to work more on strategy and large-scale projects in the future.

Before moving to Dubai I worked for Gold Medal in the UK for five years as a sales consultant on the Far East team. I then moved into a more specialist role at Pure Luxury. I was consistently one of the top performers, so when the opportunity came up for someone to assist with creating a sales culture among the business-to- consumer teams in Dubai it was the perfect opportunity. I did a six-month secondment and was offered a permanent position. Initially I was responsible for Emirates Holidays, where sales increased by 80% last year, and in January 2017 I was given the opportunity to manage dnata Travel’s sales centre and the team’s performance is going from strength to strength. I have a team of 45 agents who handle calls and live chat and my role involves managing day-to-day operations. What I enjoy most is the people and I’m lucky to have such a great management team, who have believed in me and provided me with new opportunities.
