Cruise lines Ships are more like floating resorts these days, so it’s no surprise that there’s every role onboard that you would expect to see at a land- based resort. Positions range from chefs, waiting staff and theatre performers to fitness instructors, maintenance staff and housekeepers. There are also huge technical teams that ensure the ships are seaworthy, as well as a team responsible for sailing the ships. On land, there are people who welcome passengers and head-office roles that focus on business management. These include marketing and managing links with outside companies, such as airlines and travel agencies. There are also reservations staff who deal with customers. Other


roles include people who plan itineraries and shore excursions.


Extras ’Extras’ companies sell add- ons that make an airport experience more comfortable. These include parking, hotels, private lounges and luggage services. Commercial teams negotiate deals with the suppliers, such as hotels. Other roles include web developers and managing sales through other travel companies.


Ferries Work can be seasonal from May to October. Roles include stewards/stewardesses, bar staff and catering staff. On shore, there are call centre staff who take the bookings. In these roles, a second


language, particularly French for English Channel routes, can be helpful. Ferry companies also need sales, marketing and IT staff. A wide range of engineering staff maintain the vessels and look after the ships’ safety and navigation systems. There are also training schemes for sea cadets.


Hotels Roles in hotels are varied, from the receptionist to the head chef and general manager. Behind the scenes, there are


people who develop the business, such as revenue managers and marketing experts, reservations teams and admin staff, such as finance and HR. Working in a customer-facing management role is not a nine-to-five job, but with the big chains having properties around the world, it’s a great way to work abroad.
