2016 Asia-Pacific Child Rights Award for Television

G

MA Network of the Philippines won the 2016 Asia-Pacific Child Rights Award for its television

documentary titled ‘Written on the Water’. The programme highlights the dangerous trip to school for students who must wade through the sea and climb a mountain to go to school.

The CRA Award was remitted to the winner at the ABU Prizes award ceremony in Bali on 24 October 2016. Mr Andy Brown, Regional Communication Specialist at UNICEF presented the award to Mr Jayson Bernard Santos from GMA Network- Philippines.

Every day, children in Matnog, Sorsogon, prepare for a two-hour hard trip to school. The fastest route requires them to walk across the sea, while the tide is low, and then trek up a mountain. Apart from risking their lives on the way to school, the children are met with a shortage of classrooms and textbooks.

Commenting on the winning documentary Dr Javad Mottaghi, ABU Secretary-General, said “Written on the Water sends a clear message to parents, teachers, social groups, and other local and international organisations. This message is that sacrifice, determination and hard

work starts at a very young age due to socio-economic conditions which the children are not responsible for. It’s our moral duty to help them by any means and pray for their future.”

Christopher Slaughter, CEO of CASBAA said that “Our industry reaches hundreds of millions of people around the world daily. It is heartening to see our medium being leveraged as a platform not just for entertainment, but in the service of such a worthy cause as alleviating the plight of children in need.”
