Fresh Start

New heads and new initiatives were confirmed at the 53rd ABU General Assembly in Bali, Indonesia. The year 2017 will surely bring the ABU to new heights with the election of a new Chairman and a new Vice Chairman as well as new Chairpersons for two committees.

All the meetings in Bali were undoubtedly rich in discussions and the 700 delegates present were excited to learn about the new projects to be implemented in the course of 2017. An International Dance Festival, a Radio Storytelling Festival, a Radio Drama Festival and a Song Contest for the Asia-Pacific region coupled with the launch of the ABU Sports & Entertainment Network will keep members even busier soon.

The ABU puts on record the exceptional organisation of the meetings by Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI). All the effort made by the RRI staff under the leadership of its President Director, Mr Mohammad Rohanudin, the Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, TVRI and all the staff of Westin Resort Nusa Dua in Bali will remain a great memory for us all for a long time to come. We express our heartfelt thanks to the organisers for the success of all the meetings, the ABU Prizes, the TV Song Festival and the excursion.

“Media for the Future” was the main theme of this most important gathering of the ABU and it was discussed and analysed in depth in all speeches and presentations. The topics ranged from 4K/8K technologies and the New Media to the revival of some radio activities and content management on all existing and new delivery platforms. Broadcasting for ALL – Diversity and Inclusion in the Media was once again an opportunity to consider the participation of all vulnerable groups in content.

Another laudable initiative is the setting up of the ABU Alumni. To protect the values of the big ABU family, retired or leaving broadcasting professionals from member countries will remain on board and continue to contribute to some ABU activities.

The Bali Declaration resumes the commitment and future action members will embark upon.

The General Assembly has been enriched with the World Broadcasting Unions Conference on October 26 where representatives of five international unions – NABA, ABU, EBU, ASBU and AUB pledged to foster broadcasting development worldwide. Focus was on close cooperation on new technologies, content, climate change and sports.

This edition will take you to Bali for an overview of all discussions and decisions reached by ABU members. The WBU Declaration sets new guidelines for future action on international broadcasting.

Have a pleasant reading. 4 ABU News
