T

he Director of the ASBU Technical Department, Mr Bassil Zoubi moderated this session and the panellists were: Mr Robert Plummer, Vice Chair Technical

Committee-NABA, Mr Simon Fell, Director Technology & Innovation, EBU, Dr Riyadh Najm, WBU Speaker and Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, CEO of FBC-Fiji.

Mr Simon Fell joined the conference through skype from the USA. He advised broadcasters to have recourse to websites, social media and live streaming in order to cut costs. All of us should opt for ‘Smart Production’. Mr Fell added that a better utilisation of technologies and equipment together with a digital mind set will result in big savings for any broadcaster.

Mr Bob Plummer also thinks that cross-media and multi- skilled staff as well as economy on hardware and some software are helping various broadcasters around the world to succeed in cost-savings.

Maintaining the basic strategies will also help. Dr Riyadh Najm said that to make broadcasting cheaper, we should choose good technology at a reasonable price, ensure good planning of all resources and watch the operation costs closely. He added that it is important to know what and to whom to deliver.

The Fiji Broadcasting Corporation is already a low-cost organisation with an initial investment of less than 12 million USD five years ago. Mr Riaz said that hopefully, they will go digital by the end of 2017 and presently they are benefitting a lot in terms of technical assistance and content from KBS- Korea, TRT-Turkey, IRIB-Iran and EBS-Korea.
