ABU Webinar Festival 2016


he Webinar festival received 244 registrations from participants within the region and outside. More than 800 participant-sessions from more than 100


organisations covering nearly 40 countries attended the online event organised by the ABU Technology Department.


This year, the webinar series “ABU Festival of Technology Webinars” was held from 17 August to 09 September 2016. Participation was free of cost to all ABU members and others in the industry interested in broadcast technologies and its application.


The webinar sessions were run twice each day, one session in the morning and then the same repeated in the afternoon. This was to facilitate the participation of attendees from different time zones. Each webinar session was around 60

The challenges of the Mauritian public television are the same as those being faced by the entire Broadcast industry: 1) Digital advertising is eating into the television advertising revenue. This resulted in TV advertising revenue being dwarfed by digital advertising giants like Google, Facebook, Apple and Amazon.


2) Viewers are slowly going away from Linear TV and moving towards OTT and VOD.


3) The quality of the programmes need to be upgraded as viewers are exposed to lots of international content.


To overcome all these threats, participants felt that MBC has to keep its loyal base of linear TV viewers,


upgrade its systems, train the personnel and improve its technology. Most importantly, they believe that MBC should launch an OTT and VOD service in order to catch the viewers who are in Mauritius, but prefer to watch on their own time and on a connected device. Lastly, MBC needs to change its programming mix in order to cater to the new generation – who do not tune into the current programming mix.


After discussions and sharing of views, MBC staff wanted to understand all the new technology that they can use to make their productions better and more appealing. Training was provided on the on graphics, virtual sets, new cameras, formats (HD vs 4K) and compression formats.


Mr Pather said that MBC is moving forward and new technologies like OTT and IBB need to be implemented.
