Women With the Wave – Diversity and Inclusion in the Media

n broadcasting, everybody should be on board. Broadcasters must make sure that women, children, people with disabilities and other vulnerable groups be present in all their programme content. A whole day was dedicated to gender


and diversity in the Media on 22 October in Bali. Participants at this high level forum – Broadcasting for All, Diversity and Inclusion in the Media commented on the progress achieved by many ABU members in this respect and what more could be done to include everybody in their broadcasting strategy.


In her welcoming remarks, the Indonesia Minister of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection, Mrs Yohana Yambise said that women are playing a major role in the whole process of national development in her country. Her priority is to eliminate all forms of discrimination against women and to help end violence against both women and children. The minister pointed out that the media in Indonesia, especially RRI, is supporting the authorities in this venture.


For her part, Mrs Dwi Hernuningsih, Member of the Supervisory Board of RRI- Indonesia expressed her gratitude to the ABU for its endless support of women’s issues in the media. She added that RRI is always committed to encouraging diversity in the media.


Ms Chrissie Tucker, Manager Diversity at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation believed that gender is a key issue for all broadcasters around the world. She added that “in promoting women across the media, we can make a difference and tell stories more objectively.”


The forum moderated by Russell Isaac, a Media Consultant from the UK, consisted of 8 sessions with lots of presentations and case studies as well as high level discussions by various media experts from different parts of the world.
