ABU members who have high technological advances to support members having less resources in order to mitigate the digital divide in the region. He is happy to note that Pacific members are now well integrated in the Union’s activities.
In his presentation, Mr Iwaki underlined that in 2016, 1486 participants attended the Technical Department events, 244 benefited from the online Webinar events, 192 fellowships were provided to members and over 125 resource persons addressed the events. Some of the major events to be held in 2017 are: • Digital Broadcasting Symposium from 6-9 March 2017 in Kuala Lumpur
• Pacific Media Partnership Conference in August 2015 in Honiara hosted by Solomon Island Broadcasting Corporation-SIBC
• ABU Series of Technology Webinars • 4th Workshop on IBB and OTT • 2nd DAB+ Digital Radio workshop in Kuala Lumpur • 3rd Basic Engineering training in Kuala Lumpur
Masakazu Iwaki re-elected TB and TC Chairman
Mr Masakazu Iwaki was re-elected Chairman of the ABU Technical Bureau and ABU Technical Committee for a new term of two years. He is Head of Human Interface Research Division Science and Technology Research Laboratories at NHK-Japan.
Three new Vice Chairmen were also elected: Mr Tharaka Mohotty of MTV-Sri Lanka, Mr Kong Bin of RTPRC-China and Mr Lasantha Samaranayake of EAP-Sri Lanka.
The 18 members elected to the ABU Technical Bureau are Phoenix TV-Hong Kong, EAP-Sri Lanka, NBT-Thailand, TBC- Tonga, MTV-Sri Lanka, NHK-Japan, TPT-Thailand, TVB-Hong Kong, TBS-Japan, IRIB-Iran, KBS-Korea, DDI-India, Mediacorp- Singapore, RTM-Malaysia, TRT-Turkey, RRI-Indonesia, SBC- Saudi Arabia and RTPRC-China.

The ABU Technical Committee also confirmed the appointment of Mrs Hanife Sayilir of TRT-Turkey as Topic Area Chairman for Production, Dr Narichika Hamaguchi of NHK-Japan as Topic Area Chairman for Transmission, Mr Tharaka Mohotty as Topic Area Chairman for Capacity Building and pending official confirmation from RTPRC-China, Dr Li Leilei for Spectrum Topic Area.
