Report on Activities


Ms Vijay Sadhu, ABU Head of Radio Programming, outlined an extensive range of projects undertaken on behalf of members throughout the year. These included the ABU Music Exchange, the Radio Drama workshop (as a precursor to the ABU Radio Drama Festival), the Radio Song Festival, and the RadioAsia and Media 2020 conferences. In addition, Vijay referred to two major projects being developed including the ABU Drama Festival and the ABU Storytelling Festival. The Radio Working Party meeting covered a range of exciting and interesting ideas on broadcasting.


1. The Radio Working Party meeting heard a number of case studies.


Shammi Lochan from FBC- Fiji reported the importance of radio during major emergencies where radio focused on recovery.


2. Indu Shekar Sinha from the BBC- UK highlighted the development of the BBC player which allows worldwide audiences to connect to BBC radio broadcasts via their mobile phones.


3. Radio New Zealand presented “checkpoint” which couples live radio broadcast with Television visuals to enrich the experience of the audience.


4. Koichi Okumura from NHK gave a very refreshing activity connecting


RWP Recommendations


The Radio Working Party made several recommendations to the Programming Committee. 1. ABU PC to consider the need to facilitate program exchange among its members. 2. ABU to have more in country/regional workshops for Radio members.


3. ABU Programming Department to facilitate exchange and study programs among member broadcasters to enhance capacity/resource building of content creators.


4. ABU Programming Department to bring co-productions among members.


5. The RWP recommended that the Programming Department take into account the changing media environment including multi-platforms, web and mobile based media and social media, and the need for Radio and TV to adapt and change.


At the conclusion of the RWP meeting, a video presentation was made by the Chairperson conveying appreciation of the substantial contribution made by Vijay Sadhu in initiating and developing radio activities for the Union. She will retire from the ABU in July 2017.
