Session 1: Public Service Media in the Digital Era

r Jean Philip De Tender, Director Media at the European Broadcasting Union moderated this session and the panellists were: Mr Patrick Leusch,


Managing Director GMF at DW-Germany; Mr Young Jun Lee, Executive Director Programming & Marketing at KBS-Korea, Mr Maher Abderrahmane, Manager Spectrum/Afro-med News at ASBU, and Ms Esther Enkin, Ombudsman for English Services, CBC-Canada.


Mr Lee centred his presentation on the evolution of the online streaming platform, My K at KBS for both TV and Radio content. He said that technology allows broadcasters today to make mobile and online advertisements part of the revenue model.


Ms Enkin highlighted the importance of digital audience and research in order to better understand the taste of the audience. She believes that social media represents a ‘rosy future’ for broadcasters, substantiating that in the USA where 65% of people get their news from Facebook, Google and Twitter.


Broadcasters should use all available platforms to enter the digital world and this is not enough, said Mr Leusch. He thinks that a strategy should be developed for every single market and broadcasters should mix platforms according to digital standards and habits.


Mr Abderramane underlined the importance of good governance in today’s broadcasting industry. He explained how positive changes occurred at Tunisian radio and television after the Arab Spring. The revolution gave rise to a new governance challenge and he pointed out that good governance should be in line with the latest technology so that the audience is satisfied with the news, sports events and other programmes offered to them. He concluded by saying that the digital landscape is redefining the role of the media.
