he Technical Committee (TC) adopted two recommendations based on its deliberations this year. The recommendations were on cyber security


and system requirements for character set for subtitling and closed captions.


Cyber security was discussed at the last WBU Technical Committee and WBU meetings in Geneva and Montgomery. The ABU is planning to launch some studies and is collaborating with the North American Broadcasters Association (NABA) and the European Broadcasting Union. The objective is to prevent media organisations from being targeted in massive security attacks.


There is a growing interest with Closed Captions/Subtitles services on digital television. The ABU is presently working on the technical requirements and will help to maximise the commonality of the implementation, thus enabling easy content exchange in the Asia-Pacific region.


Lots of topics were raised during the two-day meeting chaired by Mr Masakazu Iwaki, TC Chairman, including: ABU Digital Strategy, Next generation services such as 4K and 8K UHDTV systems including High Frame Rate and High Dynamic Range, IP in media production etc. Digitalisation of Archiving and Media Asset Management, workflows, New Enhancements in Delivery, Focus on Field Production; Enhancements in EWS, content creation and delivery, the IBB and OTT new standards, technologies, features, services, low cost studios for radio and TV, and enhancing online training.

At the opening of the TC meeting, Dr Frederik Ndolu, member of the RRI Supervisory Board stated that DRM and DAB+ digital tests are being carried out in Indonesia and RRI is looking for the best solution to offer the Indonesian audience the best quality service through digital radio.
