The Third ABU-AIBD Workshop Focused on IT and IP Services

oung engineers from AIBD and ABU members were informed about recent developments in Information Technologies (IT) and Internet Protocol


(IP) based services for media broadcasting. These were the main topics discussed during the third Regional Workshop on Engineering Fundamentals for Broadcasters from 7-11 November 2016 in Kuala Lumpur.


Forty-one engineers and technical staff from 17 organisations representing 9 countries attended the workshop which got the support of both AIBD and ABU members. Mediaprima and Astro provided the resource persons while the trainers were from Rohde & Schwarz and Microsoft.


A number of young engineers who are embarking on their careers in modern media broadcasting benefited from the course. The 5-day workshop focused on relevant fundamentals of audio and video systems, evolution, current trends and possible future scenarios in a converged media world. Topics discussed also included cloud technologies, digital audio and video processing and transmission standards, its implementation and deployment as well as a look at complementing media platforms and evolving technologies.


This is a regular human capacity building event of the ABU Technical department that is conducted annually in November.


Regional Workshop and Training on Digital Radio Broadcasting

he second regional workshop and training on Digital Radio Broadcasting was held in Kuala


Lumpur, Malaysia from 21-25 November 2016.


It was jointly organised by the


ABU, the Arab States Broadcasting Union (ASBU), the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD) and the WorldDAB.


Bridging the two regions, the Asia- Pacific and the Arab States, 35 participants from 11 ABU member countries and 5 from the ASBU attended the human capacity building event which ran for five days. Six resource personnel contributed to the course, which also had a field visit to the radio facilities of ABU member - Radio Television Malaysia (RTM).

The 5-day course aimed at imparting knowledge on the state-of-the- art digital broadcast technologies, standards and services based on DAB, especially in delivery, having primary emphasis on current DAB+ technology.


The workshop also discussed how radio broadcast organisations can explore hybrid technologies to offer evolving services. Participants also learned how to plan, design and implement a digital radio broadcast network.
