ABU Supported TV Journalism Training in Dhaka, Bangladesh

D

esigned for either the working journalists doing the same thing for years together or for the

new entrants coming up with bubbling new ideas in the business of TV News, the training programme turned out to be a great learning experience for both parties. The ABU supported Basic Training in TV Journalism was hosted by Bangladesh TV (B TV) in Dhaka from 19 to 26 September 2016. Fifteen participants were drawn from the experienced as well as new Producers, Reporters and Camerapersons of the state TV broadcaster. Mr Snehasis Sur, a senior TV Journalist of India’s Public Service TV Broadcaster, Doordarshan and a reputed Media Trainer, was deputed by ABU as the Trainer.

The main advantage of this international training programme was that the participants and the trainer all spoke in their mother tongue, which made the training most effective. Another thrust area of the training was to improve the capacity to handle content as well as technique and to see its reflection on the screen within the training period itself.

Another experiment which made the training a fulfilling experience was having ample opportunity for interaction. Several hands-on

exercises on improving presentation techniques, ensuring better camera work and quality sound recording also contributed much towards the success of the training programme. The main topics deliberated on in the training included: reporting, editing, making voiced over news capsules, interview techniques including single camera interviews edited by camera and single camera set piece interviews to give the effect of double camera work, TV news management and safety of journalists and anchoring techniques, among others. Four telecast worthy news stories, which came out as part of the training exercises were highly praised. A short TV Report on the Training Programme itself was also produced by the participants.

Shafiullah Suman and Siddiquir Ramahan spoke on behalf of the fellow participants to say that the training was very useful and fruitful for them as they could find newer dimensions in what they have been doing so far and also learnt new techniques on how to conduct single camera interviews live and many other techniques which, they said, would definitely make a significant improvement on the screen. The regular preview of the afternoon news bulletins of the channel allowed participants to identify the shortcomings and also

discuss the remedies and better ways of handling them.

The Training Programme was inaugurated by Md. Harun-Or-Rashid, the Director General of BTV. The completion Certificates were given away by the country’s Minister of State for Finance and Development Mr Abdul Mannan at the Valedictory Session. The Director General stressed the need for capacity building of the employees of all sections of the state broadcaster and thanked the ABU for supporting such activities.
