Quality Management Workshop: Interactive and Convincing

The Workshop was conducted by Dr David Balme, CEO of Challenge Optimum S.A from Switzerland. Mr Balme primarily highlighted the various benefits that media organisations could reap by adopting quality management. He also highlighted the procedure for becoming an ISAS certified organisation. This interactive workshop was attended by around 50 participants.

he Quality Management Workshop’s theme “A Cornerstone of Media for The Future?” was held on 22 October 2016. The objective of the workshop was


to develop capacity building for broadcasters and media personnel for undertaking four key challenges: multiplatform


The welcome remarks were delivered by Mr Ardika, Head of Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI). Thai PBS which was recently certified by ISAS shared their experience as well as The Maharaja Group from Sri Lanka which is in the process of being certified.


The Quality Management Workshop has attracted a lot of interest from various ABU members and the Secretariat of the ABU is very confident that more members will enjoy the benefits of QM in the future ensuring the survival of their stations and also giving them a competitive edge.


The ABU Legal Department on the Move


T


he Intellectual Property and Legal Committee (IPLC) is the new name for the formerly known ABU Copyright Committee. This change of name was approved


at the 53rd General Assembly and now reflects the wider issues around intellectual property and legal matters in the broadcasting industry.


Mr Yan Bo, IPLC Chair and Mr Nawaz Dookhee, Manager- Regulatory, Legal & IP Services at the ABU made an overview of the main activities run by the ABU Legal Department during the past year. The 22nd ABU Copyright Committee and Forum held in Malaysia in March 2016 discussed various topics such as Sports Coverage, News Protection, DRMs and Arbitration.


Furthermore, there has been a complete overhaul of the ABU Legal website. Contracts for the Programming and Technical Departments have been updated. Legal Liaison Officers have been appointed in member countries. The IPLC Terms

of Reference has been amended. Negotiations have been carried out and contracts drafted for all ABU departments. There has been regular participation in the WIPO meetings in Geneva and an E-Bulletin is being released every fortnight.


In addition, Mr Dookhee announced that more in-country workshops will be conducted in 2017 and there will be a new edition of the Copyright Handbook. The 1st IPLC Meeting and Forum will be held in Uzbekistan, hosted by MTRK in April 2017.
