Ms Shanthi Bhaghirathan (MBC-Sri Lanka) was confirmed as the new Chairperson of Radio Working Party and Ms Kartini Ariffin (iM4UFM-Malaysia), Mr Soleman Yusuf (RRI-Indonesia) and Mr Fayyaz Sheheyar AIR-India) as the Vice Chairpersons.

In her opening remarks, Ms Shanthi Bhaghirathan pointed out that the RWP understands the enormous challenges facing the radio industry – including the impact of multiple platforms and digital

She said that the future of radio is strong but there is a need for the stakeholders in the radio industry to work together to harmonise the interests of the audiences and to address the requirements of new technology. She cited that producing more content could bring larger audiences but the delivery of content through different media platforms is a concern to many. She also mentioned the challenge of engaging the youth to use radio which appears to be a pervasive problem among the radio operators.


Ms Bhaghirathan stressed the need among the ABU members to have shared understanding of the problems through meaningful exchange of experiences, lessons learned and best practices. She encouraged everyone to get involved and to participate in the upcoming debate on these issues.
