진정한 뉴욕 경찰을 만나다
The New York City Police Museum
할리우드 영화 속에서 보여지는 심각한 뉴욕 경찰의 모습. 각종 퍼레이드나 타임스퀘어에서 관광객들과 함께 사진을 찍어주는 뉴욕 경찰의 모습. 어느 쪽이 뉴욕 경찰의 실제 모습일까? 아이들에게는 뉴욕 경찰에 대해 어떻게 설명할 수 있을까? 이러한 질문에 묵묵히 답하고 있는 곳이 있다. 바 로 맨하튼 남단에 자리잡고 있는 뉴욕시 경찰박물관이다. 근엄한 대리석 건물에 자리잡은 박물관 내부에는 언제부터 그리고 어떤 이유로 타임스퀘 어에서 경찰들이 말을 타고 순찰을 돌며 시민들과 친근해질 기회를 가지게 되었는지 설명하는 섹션부터, 911 테러를 통해 시민들의 진정한 수호자 로 다가온 뉴욕 경찰들의 활약상이 담긴 자료들까지 생생하게 전시되어 있다. 물론 경찰복의 변천사나 경찰들이 소지하고 있는 무기, 모형 감옥 등 흥미로운 자료들도 함께 볼 수 있다. 뉴욕시 경찰박물관은 우리 일상을 안전하게 지켜주고 늘 시민들에게 친근하게 다가오려고 노력하는 뉴욕 경 찰들의 실제 모습을 아이들과 함께 즐겁게 확인해볼 수 있는 의미있는 공간이었다.
When I visited the Police Museum, there was a large event. The event exhibited all the police cars from the 1900s to present. Also, there were futuristic cars that appeared in the popular films such as Batman Forever. Even if they were just movie props, they were most popular in the event. They displayed all of the cars outside the museum for everyone to see. Actually, the police car show is the biggest event that the New York City Police Museum has. Each police car has its real owner. When the police car event takes place, the owners bring their cars and put them on display for everyone to see. They ex-
hibit the cars from the oldest to the most recent so you can see how the police cars have changed from time to time. If you have any questions on the police cars, then you can always ask the owner to help you out. When they do this, the visitors will have an opportunity to see what the old patrol cars looked like. Without this event, children will never be able to see how the police cars were and how they changed through time. Not only can we see this, of course, you can go inside the museum to learn and see a lot of things. On the second floor of the museum, there is a place where we can remember the people who has died on 9/11. The museum displays the victim’s badges in a room to remember what they did to save as many people as they could. They also show the equipment of the firefighters and police to remember their braveness that they have showed when they ran toward the twin towers to save anyone that they can find. On the first floor corner, there was a little place called the Junior Officers Dis- covery Zone where children ages 3-10 learn about how to be a police. Among many test facilities was being tried by children in the zone, a computer test game caught my attention. With the computer test game, you can check your talent to be a detective. First, what you had to do was look at a picture carefully and then answer some questions to see how well you investigated. In addition to this, the strength test game was very popular among all visitors including kids.
