Painting and Decorating


Sanadul Hussain was commended for his exceptional standard of work and commitment to his trade at the prestigious London Business Awards. The apprentice, who trains at HCC while working with decorating firm K&M Decorating, was a finalist for the London Apprentice of the Year award. He has impressed his employers, who nominated him for the award, with his consistency, determination and dedication to producing high quality work. Sanadul’s other achievements include winning a gold medal in 2009 at the regional heat of SkillBuild, the UK’s biggest Construction competition.


Painting and Brickwork: Skills for Working Life


(Entry 3) This is an entry level vocational Diploma based in Painting and Brickwork. You will have the chance to work in both the Painting and Brickwork workshops. This is to ensure a greater understanding at level 1 in either of the chosen trades. Functional Skills in maths and English are built into the crafts alongside the underpinning trade knowledge, health and safety and ICT. The course is designed to help you settle into college life and progress is based on strong tutorials and personal development.


Entry requirements: College interview and assessment – no formal qualifications are necessary.


Next possible steps: Brickwork Level 1 Diploma or Painting and Decorating Level 1 Diploma.

Diploma (level 1) On this 36-week course, you will develop knowledge and practical skills to reach standards recognised by the industry. You will gain new knowledge and skills in surface preparation, painting, paperhanging and basic specialist finishes. There are class-based technology and theory lessons, as well as Key Skills in application of number and/or communications. You will be

working from height on access equipment and will come into contact with oil and water based materials. You will need to have and wear correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.


Entry requirements: A good command of English (GCSE A-E).


Possible next steps: Diploma in Painting and Decorating NVQ level 2 - if employed.

There are class-based technology and theory lessons, as well as Key Skills in application of number and/or communications. You will be working from height on access equipment and will come into contact with oil and water based materials. You will need to have and wear correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.


Entry requirements: Painting and Decorating Diploma (level 1) and a good command of English (GCSE A-E).


Next possible steps: Painting and Decorating Diploma NVQ level 3 - if employed.
